This Friday evening, May 24, a fresh flower display made from 400 roses and candle light will be provided by the freelance floral designer, Sara Knudson, owner of The Fourth Day Divine Floral Design, LLC in partnership with the non-profit foundation Memorial Day Flowers and historic Prospect Hill Cemetery to honor the veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Public is invited to participate by visiting the display at the Fallen Heroes Memorial at Prospect Hill Cemetery, located at 700 North George Street in York, and taking a moment to honor our heroic dead, who gave their lives defending us from terror.
Sara Knudson designed this display with the four hundred roses that were gifted through the Memorial Day Flowers foundation. Sara Knudson is pleased to be working with Jack Sommer the Managing Partner of Prospect Hill Cemetery of York to provide the display on their beautiful granite Fallen Heroes Memorial and banners which is a part of the work they do everyday to honor the fallen with their banners, flags, and Court of Valor. This grant was organized as part of a nationwide effort to unite over 50 growers of South American Roses through the Ecuadorian-American Chamber of Commerce giving more than 10,000 roses with Deleware Valley Floral Group distributing these roses free of charge to unite the public with placing flowers in cemeteries to honor veterans. Memorial Day Flowers is the non-profit organization, directed by Ramiro Penaherrera and Kevin Clifford, leading these efforts to unite the floral industry and veteran’s cemeteries nationwide, including flowers used in wreaths memorializing our soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery since 2011. The display will be in place throughout the Memorial Day weekend.
As more veterans of the wars of Iraq and Afghanistan continue to die from su***de than died in the wars, it seems a fitting time to show our support and love for our soldiers, living and dead, for all they have given in order to secure for us our freedoms. As the granddaughter of a World War II veteran who flew 53 combat missions over Germany and the daughter of a veteran of the Navy during the Vietnam War, Sara Knudson is honored by the opportunity to show her support and gratitude for all veterans, but most importantly the largely unsung heroes of these recent conflicts. She hopes her design work in fresh flowers will be a fitting tribute to the 22 souls currently honored on the 22 banners at Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery and a comfort to the families of York who have given all that we may live in peace.
