Diary of my visit to the Land Art festival in Grindelwald:
An international festival of temporary open-air installations made from natural materials.

Founded by my legendary teacher Peter Hess — a fourth-generation floral artist, designer, and sculptor.
Since 1999, he has brought together teams from Switzerland, Canada, Germany, and beyond in the heart of the Alps — in the forest near Grindelwald.

Over the course of a week, participants create works using branches, twigs, leaves, and stones. The pieces appear within the landscape — and then quietly disappear.

The format includes an open-air exhibition judged by a professional jury.
The core principle: complete integration with the natural environment, with no lasting trace.

A space for dialogue between people and place.
No frames. No structures. No traces.

Land Art (or Earth Art) emerged in the U.S. in the late 1960s as a reaction to the commercialization of art galleries and the rise of environmental consciousness. Artists moved outside the gallery walls and started creating monumental works directly in the landscape — often remote, wild, vast.

One of the pioneers? Robert Smithson, whose Spiral Jetty (1970) — a swirling 1,500-foot-long coil of rocks and mud in Utah’s Great Salt Lake — became an icon of the genre. Others followed: Nancy Holt (Sun Tunnels), Walter De Maria (The Lightning Field), Michael Heizer (Double Negative).

But Land Art isn’t just about scale. It’s about time, erosion, decay, rebirth. It asks: What’s permanent? What’s sacred? And how do we humans belong — or not belong — in the landscape?

Some of the key festivals and institutions that carry this tradition forward:
• Desert X (California)
• Arte Sella (Italy)
• Horizons “Arts-Nature” (France)
• Environmental Art Biennale (South Korea)

I’m so excited to introduce you to my incredible friend and colleague James Francois-Pijuan— a legendary New York florist.

James began his career in the ’90s as a contemporary artist, but it didn’t take long for him to realize that his true medium would be flowers — for life.

As a true New Yorker, he couldn’t be just a florist. He became a passionate researcher of the history of floral design in the U.S., and over time, has become one of the city’s most influential voices in our field.

James is an advocate for unity in the NYC floral community, a protector of the city’s historic Flower District, and a living archive of its fascinating past.

Right now, James is working on a visionary project: creating the New York Flower District Museum — a space where visitors will be immersed in floral history, take part in ongoing workshops, and connect in a dedicated bar/lounge for florists and all who understand that floral design is, above all, a powerful art form.

Feel free to reach out to James directly with questions or support — he’s truly one of a kind.

We’re making history right now. Let’s help make this vision real — together
