Is Franklin Pool really leaking 60,000 gallons per day? 🤔💧

At a recent city council meeting, it was stated that Franklin Pool may be losing 50,000–60,000 gallons of water per day and that this was part of the reasoning for possibly not reopening this summer.

To put that into perspective:

• Franklin Pool holds about 275,000 gallons total

• 60,000 gallons/day = about 22% of the entire pool every day

• That’s roughly 42 gallons per minute, nonstop

• Over one week: 420,000 gallons (more than the entire pool)

• Over a 62-day summer season: ~3.7 million gallons — equal to draining and refilling the pool 13+ times

I reached out to to the head of Parks & Rec to ask:

How was this number measured?
What test was performed?
What data supports the estimate?

I'm trying to understand how the number was established, and how it wasn't noticed during last summer's swim season.

I’ll share updates if I hear back.

I'm curious what the community thinks.

Do you think there would be larger signs of a 60,000 Gallons Per Day Leak? 💦

The Yakima Business Owner Who Took on the City — And Won

In March 2026, a Yakima County jury found the City of Yakima and two former city officials liable for malicious prosecution against downtown business owner Mark Peterson of H&H Furniture.

According to Peterson, the case began after he publicly opposed the city’s downtown plaza project years ago. What followed was a lengthy legal battle involving inspections, criminal charges, and allegations of retaliation tied to his political speech.

In this interview, Peterson discusses:

▫️ The origins of the lawsuit
▫️ His opposition to the downtown plaza project
▫️ The criminal charges filed against him
▫️ The jury verdict and financial award
▫️ His background in the Yakima community
▫️ Why he believes the case reflects deeper issues within local government

This interview contains allegations and opinions expressed by Mark Peterson regarding the City of Yakima and former / current city officials. The city denied wrongdoing throughout much of the legal process.

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested After Police Search in Yakima - 5/13/26

A 25-year-old man identified as Oakley Philp was arrested Wednesday afternoon following an armed robbery investigation in Yakima.

According to police, officers responded around 3:26 p.m. on May 13 to reports of an armed robbery at a residence in the 700 block of North 6th Street. Witnesses told dispatchers that gunshots were fired during the incident.

Investigators say the suspect entered the home wearing a mask and carrying a firearm before stealing property and fleeing the scene in a distinctive vehicle. Officers later found evidence of gunfire at the residence, though no injuries were reported.

Using descriptions of the vehicle, police located it near the 1700 block of Dalton Lane. Authorities say the suspect fled from the area on foot into a large property nearby.

Officers with the Yakima Police Department established a perimeter and were assisted by the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, the Union Gap Police Department, and Yakima Valley SWAT.

While investigators were in the process of obtaining a search warrant, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee the property but was taken into custody without further incident.

Police say charges of first-degree robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm are being referred against Philp.

There appears to be a post from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office regarding a prior burglary case back in 2020. I included a screenshot from that post that shows the alleged suspect.

I was not able to be on scene yesterday. If you caught any photos of the situation please feel free to share them, it would be much appreciated 👍

Fire crews responded to a reported fire today (4/26/26) at Bi-Mart on 5th Ave in Yakima.

According to what I’ve gathered, an older AC unit—located on the wall in the former pharmacy area—caught fire. The building filled with smoke, prompting multiple fire units to respond.

Thankfully, there are no reported injuries, and early information suggests minimal structural damage.

Bi-Mart is Closed as of now.
I’ll update if more details come out.

Recent community fundraising efforts may be bringing two Yakima pools back—at least temporarily.

On Tuesday (4/7/26), Yakima City Council voted to allocate $230,000 in reserve funds to reopen Lions Pool in “some capacity” by April 15. The funding will also help support reopening efforts for Franklin Pool.

This comes after over $100,000 was raised by community members, showing strong local support for keeping the pools open.

Both pools were originally closed as part of 2026 budget cuts approved by City Council. At the time, Yakima was facing an estimated $9 million budget deficit, and Parks & Recreation saw significant reductions—including the elimination of funding for Lions Pool operations.
Lions Pool officially closed on February 27, 2026, following those decisions.

Franklin Pool, however, still faces additional challenges. The facility needs to be evaluated for a possible leak issue, and the cost of repairs—and whether it can fully reopen—has yet to be determined.

For now, the newly approved funding is only expected to cover the 2026 season, and the long-term future of both Lions Pool and Franklin Pool remains uncertain.
