ABOUT THE SHOW
High society, scandalous secrets, and sharp Victorian wit collide in Oscar Wilde’s classic masterpiece. When Lady Windermere suspects her husband of having an affair with the mysterious Mrs. Erlynne, her 21st birthday party becomes a battleground of morality, reputation, and betrayal. Rich with Wilde’s iconic brilliant satire, Lady Windermere’s Fan asks a timeless question: what actually makes a "good" woman?

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

The Men:

Lord Windermere (Late 20s–30s): Handsome, chivalrous, and deeply devoted to his wife, though bound by a dangerous secret he cannot reveal. Requires strong dramatic presence.

Lord Darlington (30s): A witty, cynical aristocrat with a romantic heart. Secretly in love with Lady Windermere. Must master fast-paced, razor-sharp dialogue.

Lord Augustus Lorton ("Tuppy") (40s–50s): Good-natured, gullible, and easily swayed. Amusingly smitten with Mrs. Erlynne. Great comedic timing.

Mr. Cecil Graham (20s–30s): The ultimate Wildean dandy. Carefree, charming, and armed with endless witty observations about society.
Mr. Dumby (30s–40s): A stylish, somewhat superficial society figure who moves with the fashionable crowd.

Mr. Hopper (20s–30s): A wealthy, straightforward Australian visitor to London society. Slightly out of place among the aristocrats.

Parker (30s–50s): The Windermeres' dignified, unflappable butler. Proper, polished, and attentive.

The Women:

Lady Windermere (21): Young, beautiful, and fiercely moral. Uncompromising in her view of right and wrong—until her own marriage is tested.

Mrs. Erlynne (30s–40s): A glamorous, fascinating, and complex woman with a ruined reputation. Shrewd and pragmatic, yet capable of profound self-sacrifice. Strong emotional range required.

The Duchess of Berwick (40s–50s): Domineering, grand, and relentless gossip. She runs society with an iron fist. Excellent comedic presence.

Lady Agatha Carlisle (Late teens–early 20s): The Duchess’s quiet, obedient daughter. Has very few words ("Yes, Mama"), but requires strong physical comedy and expressive facial acting.

Lady Plymdale / Lady Stutfield / Lady Jedburgh / Mrs. Cowper-Cowper (Various Ages): High-society women who form the gossip mill of London. Each character highlights the hypocrisy, elegance, and absurdity of the elite.

Rosalie (20s–30s): Lady Windermere’s attentive parlor maid.

Xenia Area Community Theater proud to feature this heartwarming study of American family life which recounts the daily goings-on of the Hansons, a Norwegian family living on Steiner Street in San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th century.

John Van Druten’s gratifyingly sentimental play shows how Mama, with the help of her husband and Uncle Chris, brings up the children in their modest San Francisco home during the early years of the 20th century. Mama, a sweet and capable manager, sees her children through childhood, manages to educate them, and helps one of her daughters begin her career as a writer. Mama’s sisters and uncle furnish a rich background for a great deal of comedy and a little incidental tragedy, while the doings of the children keep everyone in pleasant turmoil.
