I am back in the thick of dividing dahlias, Scaur Swinton is such a beautiful dahlia. This color of pink can be hard for me, but I loved this dahlia in the field last year.

I will be having a dahlia tuber sale in March! In the meantime you can buy our rooted cuttings right now on our website. I love rooted cuttings and have had great results with tuber counts from them as well.

I have a big announcement coming soon for all the locals so stay tuned!

What dahlia blooms early and often, had long thin stems perfect for floral arrangements, produces good dahlia seed heads and yields a dozen or so tubers from one clump? The answer is this beauty, Wine Eyed Jill.

If you’d like to give this dahlia a try, I highly recommend it. The coloring in this dahlia blends beautifully in bouquets and the bloom size is perfect. Rooted cuttings are available for purchase now on our website, and tubers will be available in March.

What’s your top performing dahlia that checks all the boxes?

One clump of dahlia tubers from rooted cutting, Peanut Brittle dahlia produced 12 sellable dahlia tubers. 👏👏 Not every dahlia variety produces so many tubers from rooted cuttings, but Peanut Brittle is an all-star! The biggest downside to planting rooted cuttings is lower tuber yield, but I am finding it depends on variety. So far my lowest tuber yield from rooted cutting planted dahlias is GW Calhoun’s Moon. The eyes were very hard to see, so I divided each clump into 3-4 smaller clumps and will wait to see if the eyes develop better. I will put these in vermiculite in a warmer storage area so the eyes develop and then divide.

Picture 1. Peanut Brittle dahlia

Picture 2. 12 tubers from one clump, I also got 9 more “uglies” or “questionables” the uglies are the one I plant, the questionables are the ones I think have eyes, but not 100% sure.

Picture 3. Damaged tuber

Picture 4. An experimental first aid tape job on the damaged tuber. I like to experiment and see what can be done to save tubers. I also super glued one!

If you want to purchase our Peanut Brittle (pictured) rooted cuttings or any other rooted cuttings from us, they are available now on our website.

Let me know if you have any rooted cuttings questions!

Have you always thought that you only get 2-3 tubers with eyes from cutting grown dahlias? (If you don’t know what I mean by cuttings grown dahlias, dahlias are usually grown from tubers, but can also be grown from rooted cuttings usually taken from the new shoots of potted up tubers grown indoors in the winter months expressly for this purpose). I have been busy diving tubers and have found this is definitely not true. I grew a lot of cutting grown dahlias last year and as an example the cutting grown clump I just divided from the pictured dahlia, Coralie, gave me 10 sellable tubers, plus about 5 “uglies” or non-sellable tubers. Pretty amazing right? Every variety is different, but overall I am averaging well above 2-3 tubers from my cutting grown clumps.

Cuttings are a great way to increase your dahlia stock, right now I have rooted cuttings available for sale ion my website, tubers will be coming late February or early March.

I would love to hear your experience with rooted cuttings, how many tubers are you getting from your clumps?

The clumps of dahlias are looking beautiful. This is the size we are getting from 95% of the cutting grown clumps. Every so often there is a smaller one. I have enjoyed digging as the soil is so beautiful. It has come far in the 4 years that we’ve grown here. It started out very dusty and compacted, with no earthworms to be found on the entire property. There was a hard pan that didn’t allow for drainage and digging was difficult due to compaction. Now, after years of adding compost and other organic matter, the soil is a delight to work in. If you have poor soil, keep adding compost and organic matter. We use a flail mower to grind up crops on the soil and the other thing we did to break up the hard pan is use a ripper to open up the soil. It rips down 18” deep into the soil and helped open up to allow drainage and get oxygen to the roots. Do you geek out over soil like I do? I may enjoy the beautiful looking soil more than the crops it produces! 🤓
