Eight years ago, we opened our doors and welcomed dozens of photographers, yogis, nonprofits, podcasters, and other small businesses to call this space home. During this time, we navigated a global pandemic, I shifted the focus of my photography business, celebrated the birth of my son, and was elected to city council.
Over the past year, our beautiful space has been underutilized, preventing another business from thriving in this prime real estate in our beloved city. As we close our doors at the end of July, it feels fitting that The Studio in Windsor Heights will continue our mission: making space for another small business to grow.
Thank you for all the love and support over the past eight years.

Hi all! I’m thrilled to share the newest addition to The Studio! We’ve added a gorgeous piece from local artist Ciara Ladroma to our permanent collection! You may recognize Ciara from her organization, Inner Circle Co. who we love to host for events and pop ups.
I was instantly interested in this piece; the swirls of blue and green reminded me of the ocean. If there is one way to sum up how running a business has felt lately, it’s like trying to control the tides.
Ciara generously sold this piece and others to benefit Sacred Health, a business not unlike The Studio. Sacred Health is home to health and wellness professionals, practitioners, and has a space to host events. Their business launched early 2020 and... well you can guess the obstacles they’ve had to overcome through Covid. The first year of business is hard enough, let alone when a pandemic knocks your legs out from under you.

My photography business formally started in 2011, and I quickly found the need for a studio space. I found an affordable home in a shared studio, and felt so lucky to be able to access a great space at a low monthly price, but I also saw opportunities how the space could be better utilized. After purchasing our home in 2013, I moved my studio in home, but by 2015 it was simply too much to have a fully functioning home and studio in the same space. We began our hunt for the perfect spot to call home.
Knowing my part-time photography business would leave our studio empty most of the time, I had a vision of giving others the opportunity to grow their business the same way I had in renting a shared space. I also knew plenty of small business owners who commiserated at meeting clients in coffee shops, wishing they could access more professional environment.
After searching downtown and West Des Moines, we were overjoyed to find the perfect spot just blocks from our home in Windsor Heights. Located on University Avenue, just a couple blocks north of the interstate, I can’t imagine finding a better central location in the metro!
My husband and I (and so many of our friends!) spent nights and weekends over the next two months remodeling and furnishing the space of our dreams before our ribbon cutting on April 1st, 2016.
Within our first month of opening our doors, we had found other like-minded professionals who were eager to call The Studio home. Never feeling competition from our members, we refer business to each other, bounce ideas off of each other, and do our best to support each other! Some members use our space as a studio, while others use our consultation space for meeting with clients and in person sales.
