No jug????? That’s correct! Denver Pyle definitely didn’t play the jug and in fact you only hear the jug sound in that very first Darlings (AKA The Dillards) episode, not in our subsequent television episodes!

How did it happen? The Andy Griffith Show used a stunt jugger in a sound studio (and the stunt jugger actually used water bottles to get that sound…not a moonshine jug, gasp!). We went in and pre-recorded our songs and then the jug sound was edited in after the fact. Then we all “pretended” on the set and were simply singing/playing along to our own track, so what you actually hear is the professionally recorded version from a sound studio; it’s too hard to record and mix music in a big open tv studio space (and outdoors? Forget it).

“So what do you mean it was only in the first episode?” - well, we were a real band with real record sales who really toured all over the place and we had no jug in our music so we asked the show to remove that sound, which they did. This means you’re watching a “double” pantomime: Denver pretending to jug to a pretend sound that doesn’t even exist after episode one.

The more you know…

Why didn’t “The Darlings” talk on The Andy Griffith Show? From the very, very beginning, right when we were cast Andy had told us that we wouldn’t be paid as actors might be…we were musicians after all and as Andy said “there wouldn’t really be enough room for all of you to have lines anyhow.”

So we were each set to receive a couple hundred dollars, which was fine by us (remember we had just barely arrived from Missouri on our mission to “make it” as a band so you can imagine we were blown away to be on a successful television show).

But then Andy said something that changed our lives forever (and incidentally this also changed the entire genre of bluegrass forever) - he said “now what I will do is allow you all to record/perform your original bluegrass songs and we’ll use them on the show…plus I’ll let you retain the rights to those songs so that you can own them going forward…”

What does this mean? It means that the world has heard our songs like “Dooley” and “There is a Time” nearly every single day for the past 60+ years! Our appearances, along with Flatt & Scruggs’ appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies, turned bluegrass from a regional art form to something known in the mainstream and our songs became bluegrass classics so well known and ubiquitous that many forget we wrote them!

Andy could have made us perform public domain songs or insisted that his company own the publishing of our songs but no, he was so kind and generous to do that for us.

So we never talked on the #1 television show of all time, well, almost never for you trivia buffs, but we were given a gift beyond measure for our musical careers, a gift that really did change an entire music genre as well…

Very thankful for Andy Griffith!

The music world is mourning the loss of one of their own. Singer/songwriter, Peter Yarrow, best known as a member of the influential folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary, has died, this according to the New York Times.

Yarrow played a pivotal role in shaping the folk music scene of the 1960s and beyond. With his bandmates, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, Yarrow achieved widespread fame through their hit songs, including “Puff the Magic Dragon,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “If I Had a Hammer.”

Yarrow’s music was deeply intertwined with the social and political movements of his time, as the group used their platform to advocate for civil rights, peace, and environmental causes. Throughout his career, Yarrow remained committed to activism, working with organizations that promoted education, social justice, and children’s welfare. In addition to his musical contributions, Yarrow produced and composed songs, earning critical acclaim for both his creative work and his efforts to engage with pressing societal issues.

After the disbandment of Peter, Paul, and Mary in the 1970s, Yarrow continued his musical career as a solo artist while maintaining his dedication to activism. He received numerous awards for his artistic and humanitarian work, cementing his legacy as both a musical icon and a tireless advocate for positive social change.

Yarrow was 86, at the time of his passing. His memory will live on through his music.

The new songs were cowritten by the three singers, and a single should be coming soon with a release date announcement to follow.

The Quote By Gene Simmons Which Proves Why KISS Just Sold Their Publishing For $300 Million :

“There’s not gonna be another Beatles, Hendrix, or KISS because there’s no longer a record industry. There’s only chaos.”

“ The next 15 year old kid who plugs into his Marshall amplifier won’t be able to make a living because record companies don’t pay advances, royalties or promotion anymore.”

“ It’s the freckle face kid who feels he or she is entitled to steal music without paying for it. Because in their logic you don’t need money because you’re rich being a musician. That’s the problem with downloading and the internet. Now everything is for free.”

“From 1958 - 1988 you can name at least 100 bands or artists that became iconic. Everyone from The Beatles, to Elvis Presley, to The Rolling Stones, and many more.”

“From 1988 until today you won’t be able to name one iconic band. And don’t tell me Nirvana. They had two albums and were done.”

“The nail has been put into the coffin of Rock And Roll.”
