The bluebirds that flank Host’s logo honor my late Granny. They are a reminder to seek happiness in the midst of hard work and to serve with a joyful heart. Today, on her heavenly birthday, it feels right to share a glimpse of who she was and how that shaped me.

Granny toiled around her daylily farm in a perfectly imperfect robin’s egg blue pickup truck she coined the “Bluebird of Happiness.”

Her uniform was a big brimmed straw hat, worn out jeans, and a long sleeve shirt to protect her skin. It didn’t matter how hot it was. She wasn’t afraid of discomfort, getting her hands dirty, or saying what came to her mind.

On Sundays, she woke grandchildren merrily singing “This is the day that the Lord has made” coming down the halls. 🎶 She’d get all gussied up and we’d pile in that same blue work truck and ride to the church where my parents and many of my cousin’s parents were married. We each got a quarter to put in the collection plate. She didn’t have much, but she was consistently frugal, reverent, and grateful.

There have been many moments I’ve longed to talk to her since we started this business. I imagine bringing her here to see and marvel at every little thing. Any type of treat around her, like pizza or cake for example, and she’d notoriously exclaim, “Let’s have a party!” 🥳 Simple pleasures and togetherness were the ticket to her happiness.

She loved doing the dishes while watching the birds and squirrels out her kitchen sink window. She always said she wanted her job in heaven to be washing dishes!! 😆😇

I did not inherit that particular passion, but her jubilance and unapologetic, humerous ways live on in my heart and here in our venue rent free.

What a joy it is to be working away at something you truly love! 🐦💕👒🛻
