Our neighborhood lost something irreplaceable, last night. Mother African Union Church has stood in Cool Spring for generations — a cornerstone of faith, history, and community that cannot be measured in brick and mortar alone. Its loss is felt deeply, not just by its congregation, but by everyone who calls this neighborhood home.
This one is personal for us. Coterie is two blocks away. Our home is right behind the church. When the fire broke out, we weren’t just watching as neighbors — we were watching as a neighbor whose family and livelihood were in the path of what could have been so much worse.
We also want to take a moment to acknowledge the men and women of the Wilmington Fire Department. Because of their courage, their skill, and their unwavering commitment to this community, the fire did not take more. That is not a small thing. That is everything. They protected our neighborhood, our home, and our café. We will not forget that.
To every Wilmington firefighter please come in this week. Coffee is on us. We would love to personally thank you. It is the very least we can do for the people who protect this neighborhood and everyone in it.
To the congregation of Mother African Union Church — our hearts are with you. Cool Spring stands with you. If there is a fundraiser or relief effort underway, please let us know. We would be honored to help however we can.
