Cincinnati barber Vernon Jackson opens his shop on his days off to give free haircuts to children with additional needs. He started The Gifted Event in 2021 after hearing from parents whose children had struggled with visits to other barbers. At Noble Barber and Beauty, he gives them time to settle in and get comfortable, without the pressure of another customer waiting for their turn.

Donations help cover the haircuts, so families don’t have to pay. For Vernon, a big part of each appointment is earning the child’s trust before picking up the clippers. Parents have described children who once dreaded haircuts asking when they can go back, and some families have travelled from as far away as Canada to see him. Having someone willing to take their time can make all the difference.
