Toni Morrison is saying that difficult times are not the time to become silent or give up. Artists should create, write, speak and tell the truth. Art and language help us understand what is happening, connect with one another and imagine something better.
In simple terms:
When the world is hurting, artists must keep creating. Art gives people a voice, and that voice can help society heal.
