What an incredible legacy that Olive Ann Beech has. Growing up in Kansas, she would go to the American Secretarial and Business College. After taking a job in Augusta for an electrical firm, she’d soon become a part of a start up aviation company in Wichita known as . She started as secretary for Mr. Clyde Cessna.

It was there that she met a man who tried to sweep her off her feet. As a barnstormer, Walter tried to show off his skills to impress her. Finally, he succeeded and the two would be married in 1930. They’d return to Wichita in 1932 and start their Beechcraft company. After a serious illness in 1940, Olive Ann would go on to take an even more active role in the company and at his death, she became the President and Chair of the Board. She would pass off the position of President to her nephew Frank Hedrick.

During her time, Beechcraft produced several incredible aircraft, including the Queen Air, Baron and King Air. She was one of few women to lead major organizations, and she did it with clarity and poise. She was a major philanthropist in our community. You can read more of her story at The Barnstormer and the Lady! This we pay tribute to the leading lady of aviation -
