The most famous is the oriental hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis), growing wild in Dalmatia, Greece and Asia Minor, where it blooms in the earliest spring. Its cultivation in Europe became especially popular since the 15th century; since then, over three hundred high-quality varieties have been bred. But the total number of varieties is much greater: they number in the thousands and new ones are obtained every year. Hyacinth inflorescences come in a variety of colors: white, yellow, red and pink of various shades, blue, purple and blue to almost black; there are varieties with variegated colors. There are double and simple hyacinths; the latter are usually larger and often have a regular shape.
