02/11/2024

Today is the day that they announced the nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024! Five of these fifteen acts have been nominated before, but the other ten have never once been nominated! Some are so shocking that it will make you think, "They have never been nominated?" There are no country acts or first-time eligible acts nominated this year. Three of the five acts that I personally voted for last year got inducted (George Michael, Rage Against the Machine, and Missy Elliot; the other two that I voted for and didn't get in were Soundgarden and Iron Maiden), but my predictions of who would be inducted were almost spot on (I predicted Kate Bush, Missy, George, and Willie Nelson; the only act out of my predictions that didn't get in was Soundgarden). Like last year, I will reveal the nominees by giving you the first year that they were eligible, how many times they have been nominated, my favorite song from them, my prediction on their chances of getting in, and if I've ever played them at a gig. Let's get to the nominees!

A Tribe Called Quest
Eligible since: 2015
Nominated in: 2022, 2023, and 2024
My favorite song: "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Rarely

This is a legendary rap group, but beyond maybe "Can I Kick It?", I don't know if many people know their songs.

Mary J. Blige
Eligible since: 2018
Nominated in: 2021 and 2024
My favorite song: "Real Love"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Many times

Mary was dubbed the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" and earned that title. Unfortunately, there are a few divas nominated on this list who have a better chance of being nominated this year.

Cher
Eligible since: 1991
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Just Like Jesse James"
Chances of induction: Good
Have I played this artist at a gig: Many times

Cher is one of those divas who has a better chance than Mary. Even though this is her first nomination, she is a legend who has waited longer than any of the other nominees on this list. Plus, she is in fifth place in the fan vote as of this writing.

The Dave Matthews Band
Eligible since: 2019
Nominated in: 2020 and 2024
My favorite song: "Don't Drink the Water"
Chances of induction: Decent
Have I played this artist at a gig: Rarely

I absolutely hate this band, so picking out a "favorite" song of his took a while. People do actually like this band though. When he was on the ballot in 2020, he won the fan vote. Unfortunately (for him), he didn't get inducted. When the fan vote started in 2012, the winner has always been inducted, except when DMB won. As much as I don't like them, I think that they should have gotten in. I don't want the winner of the fan vote in the future to be an artist that I do like and not have them get inducted, so they should always induct the winner because otherwise, the fan vote is pointless. As of this writing, they are in fourth place.

Eric B. & Rakim
Eligible since: 2012
Nominated in: 2012 and 2024
My favorite song: "Don't Sweat the Technique"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Rarely

This rap duo has so many great, bass-heavy songs, but I don't think that I've ever played them at a gig. Like Tribe, this is a legendary rap group that doesn't have a whole lot of songs that casual listeners would know. The only song that I can think of might be "Microphone Fiend", but that's only because RRHOF inductees Rage Against the Machine covered it on their Renegades album.

Foreigner
Eligible since: 2003
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Juke Box Hero"
Chances of induction: Good
Have I played this artist at a gig: Many times (mostly their slower songs)

This is a band that I thought would never get nominated, but they have such a large fan base (including me) who like them, I think that they will get in the way Journey got in. As of this writing, they are in third place in the fan vote.

Peter Frampton
Eligible since: 1998
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Do You Feel Like We Do (live version)"
Chances of induction: Decent
Have I played this artist at a gig: Just the singles occasionally from Frampton Comes Alive!

Even though his biggest hit was "I'm in You" (Billboard Hot 100 #2), the only songs that most know of him are from his live album Frampton Comes Alive! I remember the quote from Wayne's World 2 where Wayne tells Cassandra, "Frampton Comes Alive? Everybody in the world has Frampton Comes Alive. If you lived in the suburbs you were issued it. It came in the mail with samples of Tide". He made a splash at last year's ceremony by playing guitar with Sheryl Crow, so the Rock Hall must have taken notice. I just don't know if one mega-selling live album is going to get him inducted. He is in second place on the fan vote as of this writing though.

Jane's Addiction
Eligible since: 2013
Nominated in: 2017 and 2024
My favorite song: "Stop!"
Chances of induction: Decent
Have I played this artist at a gig: Rarely

I think that they might get in because no one on this list fits the alt-rock slot. They would get in like Rage got in. Unfortunately like a lot of the nominated artists this year, not many people can name a Jane's Addiction song, except for maybe "Been Caught Stealing" or "Jane Says". Also, they are important because lead singer Perry Farrell created Lollapalooza, the touring festival where many people got to see alternative acts all in one place.

Kool & The Gang
Eligible since: 1995
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Jungle Boogie"
Chances of induction: Excellent
Have I played this artist at a gig: Many times

You don't know how many times I've played "Ladies' Night," "Get Down on It," and especially "Celebration" (that one is a wedding staple!) With so many danceable hits from a band that's been around for 55 years is amazing that this is their first nomination. There's a party going on right here, and it will be when Kool & The Gang get inducted.

Lenny Kravitz
Eligible since: 2015
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Are You Gonna Go My Way"
Chances of induction: Decent
Have I played this artist at a gig: Occasionally

Lenny has so many recognizable hits from the '90s and early '00s that he might possibly get in, but I have a feeling it won't be this year (maybe).

Oasis
Eligible since: 2020
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Morning Glory"
Chances of induction: Unlikely
Have I played this artist at a gig: Only "Wonderwall" occasionally

Like DMB, I struggled to find a song from Oasis that was my "favorite". I prefer their Britpop rivals Blur. While they had almost Beatlesque popularity in the '90s and '00s in England (including eight #1 hits), they are a one-hit wonder in the USA (their only Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hit was "Wonderwall," which peaked at #8). For that reason, I believe that they won't get in this year. Once they have been waiting awhile, they might consider it.

Sinéad O'Connor
Eligible since: 2013
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "Fire on Babylon"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Just "Nothing Compares 2 U"

This was a shocking nomination. I guess America has forgiven her for the "Saturday Night Live" protest where she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II to protest the publicly acknowledged child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. To this day, like Oasis, she remains a one-hit wonder in the USA ("Nothing Compares 2 U" peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and stayed there for four weeks). My guess is that her death last July put her name back in the nominee committees' heads, but I don't think that she will get in this year.

Ozzy Osbourne
Eligible since: 2006
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: "No More Tears"
Chances of induction: Possible
Have I played this artist at a gig: Rarely

Ozzy is a metal legend, but the Hall in the past has not been kind to metal. Judas Priest through their "Musical Excellence" side category, and if he gets in, it will probably be that way. Although, as of this writing, he is winning the fan vote.

Sade
Eligible since: 2010
Nominated in: 2024
My favorite song: No Ordinary Love
Chances of induction: Little chance
Have I played this artist at a gig: Occasionally

Just to let you know...Sade is a group, not a person. The group is named after its lead singer Sade Adu. Also, it's pronounced SHAW-day. Anyway...I love this nomination. Their smooth, sexy, jazzy sounds are perfect for intimate times with your loved one. As far as them getting in...I don't think that they will get in this year. They are going against Cher, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige.

On the fan vote, I voted for Mariah, Cher, Sade, Ozzy, and Foreigner. Who I think will be inducted will be Mariah, Cher, DMB, Ozzy, and Kool & The Gang. Tell me what you think about who got nominated and who you think will get inducted.

Today is One-Hit Wonders Day! Today I will list all of the performing acts inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that only had one hit song. I have a few parameters though. My definition of "one-hit-wonder" is an act that had only one song make it into the Billboard Hot 100's Top 40 songs. These acts may have several hits on other charts, but I'm only including the Billboard Hot 100. With a few exceptions, I am eliminating acts that pre-dated the Hot 100, which started on August 4, 1958. Also, some acts had hits made famous by other acts, but I'm only including the act's original recording. Ready? Let's go!

Bo Diddley

One-Hit Wonder Song: "Say Man" (1959)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #20

Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #1
(She had another Top 40 Hot 100 hit with "Piece of My Heart" in 1968 where it peaked at #12, but she was the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company. "Me and Bobby McGee" was her performing solo.)

Frank Zappa

One-Hit Wonder Song: "Valley Girl" [with Moon Zappa] (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #32

Buffalo Springfield

One-Hit Wonder Song: "One Nation Under a Groove" (1978)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #28
(Parliament was inducted at the same time as Funkadelic as one induction, but Parliament had two hits, "Give Up the Funk [Tear the Roof off the Sucker]" which peaked at #15 in 1976, and "Flash Light" which peaked at #16 in 1978.)

Patti Smith
Inducted: 2007
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Because the Night" (1978)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #13

Jeff Beck
Inducted: 2009
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Goo Goo Barabajagal (Love is Hot)" [Donovan with The Jeff Beck Group] (1969)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #36

Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #9

Small Faces
Inducted: 2012
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Itchykoo Park" (1967)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #16
(Small Faces were inducted with Faces as one induction, but Faces had two Top 40 hits. "[I Know] I'm Losing You" peaked at #24 in 1971 and "Stay with Me" peaked at #17 in 1972.)

Randy Newman
Inducted: 2013
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Short People" (1977)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #2

Public Enemy
Inducted: 2013
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Give It Up" (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #33

Rush
Inducted: 2013
One-Hit Wonder Song: "New World Man" (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #21
(Lead singer/bassist Geddy Lee had another Top 40 hit singing the chorus for Bob & Doug McKenzie's novelty hit "Take Off" which peaked at #16 in 1982.)

Lou Reed
Inducted: 2015
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Walk on the Wild Side" (1972)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #16

N.W.A
Inducted: 2016
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Straight Outta Compton" (2015)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #38
(The song was initially released as the title track of their 1988 album of the same name, but when their biopic of the same name came out in 2015, the song finally entered the Hot 100 for the first time.)

Nina Simone
Inducted: 2018
One-Hit Wonder Song: "I Loves You, Porgy" (1959)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #18

Roxy Music
Inducted: 2019
One-Hit Wonder Song: "Love is the Drug" (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #30

T. Rex
Inducted: 2020
One-Hit Wonder Song: "'Bang a Gong (Get It On)" (1971)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #10

Kraftwerk
Inducted: 2021
One-Hit Wonder Song: "'Autobahn" (1975)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #25

Kate Bush
Inducted: 2023
One-Hit Wonder Song: "'Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)" (1985 & 2022)
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: #35 (1985), #3 (2022)
(The original release of this song peaked at #35 in 1985, but because of its inclusion in the Netflix show Stanger Things in 2022, it re-entered the chart and peaked at #3.)

05/04/2023

The announcement of the inductees of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2023 happened this morning! This is how I did in my predictions. Four out of the five acts I predicted got in (the only one who didn't get in was Soundgarden). Two other acts I predicted also got in, but I will explain what I mean down below.

Kate Bush - Fourth time is a charm for her. I predicted that she would get in this year. We can thank Stranger Things for the momentum of getting her in because of the surprise resurgence of her 1985 hit "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)" peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It appeared in an episode in the fourth season of that show last year.

Sheryl Crow - I didn't predict her getting in, but I thought it might have been possible. A lot of times an artist inducts another artist into the Hall, and then they themselves get inducted the following year. She inducted Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo into the Hall last year, plus she performed "9 to 5" in honor of another inductee, Dolly Parton.

Missy Elliott - I predicted that she would get in, because of the two rap acts nominated this year (the other one being A Tribe Called Quest), she was the most innovative and influential. She is now the first female rap act inducted, and the first black woman inducted in her first year of eligibility.

George Michael - Another one that I predicted. He won the Fan Vote, and the late Taylor Hawkins from the band Foo Fighters asked for George's induction when their group got inducted during his speech, He is the only act to be inducted in the top 5 acts in the Fan Vote (2nd place was Cyndi Lauper, 3rd was Warren Zevon, 4th was Soundgarden, and 5th was Iron Maiden).

Willie Nelson - He was the easiest one to predict because he is a national treasure, because Dolly got in last year, and because he will be 90 when he gets in. I would have to do my research, but he might be the oldest inductee in the main Performer category to be inducted.

Rage Against the Machine - I really biffed on this one. Despite the fact that this was their fifth nomination, I didn't think that they were going to get in through the Performer category. I figured that they might get in through the Musical Excellence category, the way Ringo Star, LL Cool J, and Judas Priest got in. Otherwise, they would still have to wait. I did vote for them in the Fan Vote though.

The Spinners - Like Rage, I predicted that they might get in, but through the Musical Excellence category. I thought that they had a better chance than Rage, but I also thought that this wasn't their year either. I guess it was!

Now for the other inductees in the side categories. In the Musical Excellence category (which was originally the Sidemen category)...Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, and Bernie Taupin were inducted. Khan was nominated in the Performer category three times as a solo artist and four times as a member of Rufus with Chaka Khan. The Musical Excellence category has become a category lately for acts that have been nominated several times, but they just seem to not be able to get inducted. She would be treated in the same vein as the Performer inductees. Kooper is truly a sideman. He has played with other artists using an organ, piano, electric guitar, French horn, and many other instruments. He's played alongside legends like Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, and many more. He produced and played with Lynyrd Skynyrd on their first three albums. He formed Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967, but he left right before they became successful. Even though Taupin has had three solo albums (the first one being a spoken-word album with musical accompaniment), he will always be remembered as the longtime lyricist for Elton John.

In the Musical Influence category (formerly known as the Early Influence category), the inductees are DJ Kool Herc and Link Wray. Herc himself never made an album, but he is considered the developer of hip-hop. In 1973, he DJed the birthday party of his sister using two turntables and playing funk and disco records. He created the "break", the part of a song where the percussion is prominent. With the two turntables, he would extend the breakbeat by going back and forth using the same record on each turntable. His friend Coke La Rock was the rapper (or the "M.C.") while Herc was doing his breakbeats. His induction is perfect to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop. Wray was an electric guitar player who was one of the first artists to utilize distortion and tremolo in his playing. His song "Rumble" was inducted into a new category for singles in 2018 (a category that is no longer awarded).

Finally, the Ahmet Ertegun Award (a category for non-performers who are still essential to the history of rock & roll) went to the late Don Cornelius, the creator of and long-time host of the dance and music show "Soul Train", which ran from 1970 to 1993. Unless I'm mistaken, he is only the third music presenter (after Alan Freed, the DJ who coined the term "rock & roll", and Dick Clark, the creator and host of the influential music show "American Bandstand") to be inducted. This gives me hope that the late Casey Kasem, the creator of the radio program "American Top 40", will eventually be inducted.

That's the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2023. I'm disappointed that Iron Maiden and Soundgarden didn't get in, but overall I'm happy with it. The ceremony will be on November 3rd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, followed probably two weeks later with it being broadcast on HBO. Tell me in the comments what you think. Were you surprised who got in and who didn't?

02/03/2023

The nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have been announced! There are 14 nominees this year, and most likely only five will be inducted (with a sixth one taking the Musical Excellence slot). Here is the list of nominees.

A Tribe Called Quest
Eligible since: 2015
Nominated in: 2022 and 2023
My favorite song: "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Rarely

I love this band, but not a lot of people know who they are. I play "Can I Kick It?" very occasionally, but only for a 90s party. Since the nominees are only 14 this year, I don't think that they have a chance of induction. If it was 17 like it was last year, then maybe they might have a chance. Since Missy Elliott is a nominee as well, she will most likely get the rap slot.

Kate Bush
Eligible since: 2004
Nominated in: 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023
My favorite song: "Wuthering Heights"
Chances of induction: High
Have I played this artist at a gig: Just "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)", and only in the past year

Last year, I said that it was a slim chance of her getting inducted because most people had never heard of her. She only had one top 40 hit, which was "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)", and even then it only managed to go to #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1985. Now because of the song's appearance in an episode in the fourth season of Netflix's "Stranger Things" last year, it re-entered the chart and peaked at #3. She is back on the radar and fresh on people's minds, so she is a shoo-in to finally get in. If she doesn't get it this year, it might be a while before she will get in.

Sheryl Crow
Eligible since: 2019
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "The First Cut is the Deepest"
Chances of induction: Decent
Have I played this artist at a gig: Only "All I Wanna Do" and "Soak Up the Sun" pretty much

She is an industry darling and she plays well with the Rock Hall, so there is a decent chance that they might induct her. She inducted the duo of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo last year at the 2022 induction ceremony, and she performed "9 to 5" for Dolly Parton as well. They obviously took notice.

Missy Elliott
Eligible since: 2023
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "Work It"
Chances of induction: High
Have I played this artist at a gig: Many songs, especially "Work It" and "Get Ur Freak On"

If she is inducted, she would be the first female rapper inducted, making way for other already eligible female rappers like Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, and Salt 'N Pepa to get in. She also sings and produces her music with Timbaland (who himself I bet will get in through the non-performer category). Out of the newly eligible artists, she has the highest chance of getting inducted.

Iron Maiden
Eligible since: 2005
Nominated in: 2021 and 2023
My favorite song: "Be Quick or Be Dead"
Chances of induction: Low to slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Never

It's difficult for heavy metal artists to be inducted for some reason. The band has already said that they have no love for the Rock Hall, so chances are that they wouldn't show up much less perform if they were inducted. They are one of the most legendary metal bands ever, so they should be in. It's only their second nomination, so they probably wouldn't get in through the Musical Excellence route like fellow legendary metal band Judas Priest did last year, but that was after three nominations (and they played well with the Rock Hall). They are in fifth place on the Fan Vote, so if Soundgarden doesn't get in, maybe Maiden will.

Joy Division/New Order
Eligible since: 2004
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "Blue Monday"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: A few of their songs, mostly at 80s parties

I want to clarify why they are combining Joy Division and New Order together as one induction. Joy Division was a post-punk new wave band that started in 1976. If you know any song by them, it would be "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Frontman Ian Curtis killed himself in 1980 just as they were getting popular. The rest of the band wanted to continue, but they didn't want to call their band Joy Division without Curtis being a member, so they changed their name to New Order. They brought on Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and changed their style to a combination of post-punk music and electronic dance music. They were influential to many EDM and dance music artists that followed, but I don't think that are going to get in this year. Again, since there are only 14 nominees instead of 17 like last year, they will have to compete with several other very popular 80s artists, so they are going to have to wait.

Cyndi Lauper
Eligible since: 2009
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "I Drove All Night"
Chances of induction: Decent to high
Have I played this artist at a gig: Quite a few songs, including "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", and "True Colors"

Currently, as of this writing, Cyndi is leading the Fan Vote. Still...it's a high maybe. As it was shown years ago when The Dave Matthews Band led the Fan Vote and didn't get in, winning the Fan Vote isn't guaranteed. The reason why I'm not 100% confident that she will get in is that I think that two of the five possible slots of induction are also 80s artists like Cyndi. I think that Kate Bush and George Michael are locks to get inducted. Missy Elliot fits the rap and 90s slot, and Willie Nelson will be the Dolly Parton of this year. I think that the fifth slot will be between Cyndi and Sheryl Crow if not Soundgarden.

George Michael
Eligible since: 2010
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "Kissing a Fool"
Chances of induction: High
Have I played this artist at a gig: Many songs between his solo songs and when he was in Wham!

George Michael is one of all of my favorite artists. Faith was the third cassette I ever owned when I was a kid (after the Ghostbusters soundtrack and Bad by Michael Jackson). When he died on Christmas day in 2016, I was devastated. His upbeat songs were funky as Hell and his slow songs were so beautiful. I know that many people feel that way. Currently, as of this writing, he is in second place on the Fan Vote. Cyndi Lauper is currently in first place on it, but we have several days between now and when the vote closes one day in May, so he might pull ahead. I think that the same people who voted for first-place artist Duran Duran last year will vote for George this year.

Willie Nelson
Eligible since: 1983
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys"
Chances of induction: High
Have I played this artist at a gig: A few songs, like "On the Road Again" and "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"

Here goes the argument again. Does country music belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? I say "yes". Rock music was originally a combination of country and rhythm & blues. Rock has always been rebellious music. Willie was part of the Outlaw Country movement where they rebelled against the Nashville country establishment. His contemporaries are artists like Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and David Allan Coe. This certainly isn't the first time that a country artist has gotten in. Aside from Dolly Parton last year, there was Johnny Cash, Brenda Lee, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, and several more. There are some rockers who have both been inducted into the Rock Hall and the Country Music Hall of Fame, like Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Everly Brothers. He has been a popular icon for decades, so I'm sure he will get in this year. Besides...he will be turning 90 this April, and what a great birthday present for him! By the way...he is in third place on the Fan Vote as of this writing.

Rage Against the Machine
Eligible since: 2018
Nominated in: 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023
My favorite song: "Freedom"
Chances of induction: Slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Never

This is the artist who has been nominated the most times, and yet I don't think that they are going to get in this year either. It's weird because guitarist Tom Morello is on the nominating committee! Maybe he isn't allowed to vote for his own band because it's a conflict of interest. If they do get in, they would be the first rap-rock band to get in (despite Rock Hall inductees Run DMC calling themselves the Kings of Rock! lol) My guess is that they might get in under the Musical Excellence slot instead of the main Performers slots, like LL Cool J and Judas Priest. That might be difficult even to get the Musical Excellence slot because LL and Priest had to wait longer, so they might make Rage wait longer as well. Since Morello is not going anywhere anytime soon, they might possibly give Kate Bush the Musical Excellence slot and give one of the five Performer slots to Cyndi Lauper.

Soundgarden
Eligible since: 2012
Nominated in: 2020 and 2023
My favorite song: "Outshined"
Chances of induction: Decent to high
Have I played this artist at a gig: I think that I played "Black Hole Sun" once?

Of the three hard rock bands nominated (Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, and Rage Against the Machine), Soundgarden has the best chance of getting in. The late Chris Cornell has one of the best hard rock voices of all time. He can scream, but he can also sing their slow songs beautifully. I think that it's their year. Currently, as of this writing, they are in fourth place on the Fan Vote.

The Spinners
Eligible since: 1987
Nominated in: 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2023
My favorite song: "The Rubberband Man"
Chances of induction: Decent to slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Some songs, but it's usually at a 70s-themed party

The Spinners have been around since 1961, but their heyday was the 70s. Songs like "I'll Be Around", "Games People Play", "The Rubberband Man", and their only #1 song "Then Came You" (with two-time nominee Dionne Warwick) were classics. They are the artists that have had to wait the second longest amount of time (behind Willie Nelson), but I don't know if they are going to get in. Since they've waited so long, they might get the Musical Excellence slot.

The White Stripes
Eligible since: 2023
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "Seven Nation Army"
Chances of induction: slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: Occasionally I've played "Seven Nation Army" or "Fell in Love with a Girl"

The White Stripes' nomination is a little complicated. Like Missy Elliott, they are first-time eligible artists. Artists are first eligible when 25 years have passed since their first recording to the time they are nominated. Before the pandemic started, the schedule was like this. They would announce the nominees for the class of the next year sometime in October of the current year. Then they would announce the inductees for the next year in December of the current year or January of the next year. Finally, the ceremony would take place in April or May of the next year. For example...the announcement for the nominees Class of 2019 was announced in October 2018, the inductees were announced in December 2018, and the ceremony took place in April 2019. When the pandemic started in March 2020, this was the schedule. The nominations for the Class of 2020 were announced in October 2019 and the inductees were announced in January 2020. The ceremony was scheduled for May 2020, but the pandemic derailed that. The extremely scaled-back ceremony took place in November 2020. For the Classes of 2021 and 2022, it was nominees in February, induction in May, and ceremony in November. They decided that they liked that schedule, so they are going to keep it. The problem was that they forgot to keep the whole 25-year thing going. Eminem should have been eligible in 2021 (since his first recording was in 1996) and Missy should have been eligible in 2022 (since her first recording was in 1997). They have now course-corrected, and they have considered artists whose recording was made in 1998 or before. The White Stripes' first recording was made in 1998, so that's why they became eligible to be inducted this year. I actually like this because now every event is within the same year. As far as The White Stripes' chances of induction go, I don't think that they are going to get in this year. Their first big hits didn't get released until the 00s, so I bet many people will think that's way too soon to be inducted.

Warren Zevon
Eligible since: 1995
Nominated in: 2023
My favorite song: "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead"
Chances of induction: slim
Have I played this artist at a gig: I've only played "Werewolves of London", and only at Halloween parties

Most people will know him from "Werewolves of London" by listening to the song on a classic rock station or having gone to a Halloween party, but otherwise, he is unfamiliar to most fans. I would say that "Stranger Things" could raise his profile by playing his only top-40 hit, but "Werewolves of London" came out in 1978, and the Netflix show is based in the 80s. He is probably going to be one of those artists like The J. Geils Band, The MC5, and The New York Dolls who have been nominated a few times but just keep getting passed over.

So my personal choices that I voted for on the Fan Vote are George Michael, Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, and Missy Elliott. My prediction as to who will be inducted would be Kate Bush, Missy, George, Willie Nelson, and Soundgarden. The Musical Excellence slot (if It's not one of those nominees that I am predicting) would be Rage or The Spinners. Let me know what you think in the comments. Who are your five favorites, and which five do you think will be inducted?
