We now have a little over 1K peony plants at two different fields. As an ambassador of crop planner and production, I seek peonies that bloom successionally for us—early, mid, and late season. Not only bloom timing, but also traits that are suitable for cut flower ie stem vigor, color, scent, bloom size, and how quickly it goes from bud to shatter = vase life!
we now have a 4 varieties of white peonies, blooming from mid to late season.
Two other colors I seek out for is a Very soft pink (second slide) that has white, soft pink with cream, and soft pink with light apricot. I am so sooo in love with this variety pictured. The Buds are massive and take a bit longer to soften to marshmallow stage—but the color is perfect for all type of design work. Its huge dinner plate 8” bloom are well worth the wait. it is considered a mid-late season bloomer.
Two years ago, I spent hours deep diving into researching each variety and invested heavily ($15,000) into rootstock. More money was spent on infrastructure, organic composts, bone meal, worm castings, wedding, watering, and other amendments to nurture them.
Not all roots made it through, but it’s okay. The plants that are producing 1-2 stems are some of the healthiest bush I ever laid my hands on. It is truly a blessing to be able to dive deeper into the world of one flower and work hard to be able to embrace its prime beauty/essence. Covered in sweat, but also brushed with its scents. It’s a pretty good deal.
