San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I’ll be honest, I am not what you would call a tropical person. I’m more of a snow, mountains, cold air, dramatic landscape kind of guy. Hot and humid usually feels like punishment for a crime I don’t remember committing. Unnecessary, unearned sweating is basically hell on earth, and humanity just keeps pretending that’s normal. Bold choice.

But San Juan got me.

The history, the old stone walls, the colorful streets, the ocean, the forts, the textures, the rust, the architecture, the way everything feels like it has a story buried inside it. This place has character. Real character. Not the fake “we painted a wall turquoise so tourists would take pictures” kind. The kind that feels lived in, weathered, beautiful, and stubborn in the best possible way.

For the first time in my life, I actually caught myself thinking, “I could see myself living somewhere hot and humid.”

Which is alarming...

But San Juan has a way of making the heat feel worth it. And coming from me, that’s basically a five-star review from a man who believes sweating should require written consent.

Old San Juan has a way of making “just walking around” feel like you accidentally stepped onto a movie set, except the set is centuries old and the humidity is fully committed to the role.

These blue-gray cobblestones, known as adoquines, are part of what makes the streets so unforgettable. They’re often said to have been made from materials brought over on Spanish ships, fired into that glazed, almost ceramic surface that catches the light in the most ridiculous way. Rain, street lamps, ocean air, pastel buildings, balconies, old walls… suddenly the ground itself becomes part of the museum.

That wet, pearly shine? Pure magic. Also possibly a mild ankle hazard, because apparently 500-year-old charm likes to keep you humble.

Old San Juan is half sightseeing, half time travel, and half trying not to trip while staring at the street. Three halves, because Puerto Rico deserves extra math.

The past 24 hours minus one airport… Two more flights, 3 airports, and I’ll be back home for the longest stent since October. A whole 2.5 weeks and then I’m back on the road for 8 months… Yes you read that correctly… More on that soon. 😅
