Have you heard of the Dash Theory?

On a memorial, you’ll usually see two dates — the day someone was born and the day they passed.

And between those two dates is one tiny dash.

It may be the smallest thing carved into the stone, but it represents the biggest part of their story.

The dash represents everything in between.

The family they loved. The places they called home. Sunday dinners. Fishing trips. Favorite songs. Inside jokes. Front porch conversations. The work they were proud of. The hobbies they enjoyed. The traditions they started. The people they loved and the countless little moments that made them who they were.

An entire lifetime could never fit onto a piece of stone.

But pieces of that lifetime can.

The details chosen for a monument can tell a story that words alone sometimes cannot.

This memorial was created in loving memory of Tommie Lee Jeter. Along with his portrait, his family chose images that give us a glimpse into the things that were a part of his life and personality.

At the bottom of the memorial, a classic car and a set of wrenches add a personal touch, reflecting an appreciation for cars and working with his hands. These are the kinds of details that make a memorial truly unique to the person it represents.

Years from now, someone can look at this stone and learn more than Tommie’s name and the years he lived. They can see his face and discover a little about the things he enjoyed—the pieces of his life his family felt were important enough to preserve forever.

That is what personalized memorials are all about. Every photograph, symbol, and image has the opportunity to say, “This was him. This was part of his story.”

This memorial for Jeffrey Lynn Coe was created to preserve not only his name, but a little of who he was and the things he enjoyed. The UNC emblem and crossed baseball bats are personal details that help tell part of Jeffrey’s story, giving his family a memorial that feels connected to the man they knew and loved.

When a family visits a loved one’s resting place, it is often the smallest details that bring back the biggest memories. A favorite team, a sport they loved, or something they were known for can immediately remind you of conversations, time spent together, and moments that may have seemed ordinary then but mean so much now. Including those pieces of Jeffrey’s life makes his memorial uniquely his.

While no stone could ever capture an entire lifetime or all of the memories his family carries with them, it can provide a permanent place where Jeffrey’s life is remembered and his name continues to be honored. 🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — We Will Never Forget

Twenty-five years have passed, but September 11th remains a day that holds a special weight in the hearts of so many Americans.

Behind every name remembered from that day was a person. A parent, a child, a husband or wife, a sibling, a friend, a coworker—someone who was loved and expected to come home.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives that were lost. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger while others were running to safety. We remember the families whose lives changed in an instant, and we honor the men and women who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

We also remember what came after—the way people reached for one another, helped strangers, displayed flags from their homes and stood together as Americans. In the midst of unimaginable heartbreak, there was courage, compassion, sacrifice and unity.

As a company whose work is centered around helping families preserve the memory of those they love, we understand just how important remembrance can be. A name is never simply a name. It represents a life lived, a story told, people loved and memories that deserve to be carried forward.
