Interviewing the Officiant:
I’ve been working as a wedding officiant for over 10 years. I’ve performed close to 250 ceremonies and over the years, I’ve had couples want to interview me before deciding to book with me. Here are my thoughts….when it comes to officiant interviews, we are an important part of the ceremony, but we are one of the wedding vendors that will be there for the least amount of time. Any officiant meeting I’ve had where the couple is still “deciding” and are interviewing many other officiants, I find to not only be awkward, but I don’t find a lot of value in them.
Here is my reasoning. When it comes to the interviews, most couples don’t have very many questions or don’t even know what to ask. That leaves the officiant to ramble. I feel like everyone feels a bit uncomfortable because they don’t know what direction either is wanting to go. I also find the ending of these meetings to simply be, “Well, let me know your decision!” I’ve had couples never get back to me after these meetings. I also think that this is more work for the couple to do these interviews.
So, if interviewing the officiant beforehand isn’t a good idea, then how will you know if you like the officiant’s style? My suggestion, look at their reviews. Look at their pictures. Are they dressed appropriately? Do they present themselves as reliable and professional? How have they been with communication when you’ve asked them questions? Are they responsive? How many years have they been officiating for and how many weddings have they done?
All of these will help you feel more comfortable when making your decision.
My wedding meetings are always surrounding the details about the wedding itself. I won’t ask these questions if I know the couple is still shopping around and hasn’t chosen me yet. I love answering questions and am extremely responsive to messages. But to have a full on in person meeting beforehand not knowing if they are going to move forward with me, hasn’t ever proven beneficial to myself or the couple.
