So many shows! Come out tonight to the last graphic design senior show featuring Morgan Hall and Ashlee Nelson in the gallery of the SWOSU art building from 4:30-6:30 pm and then move to the SWOSU Hilltop Theatre for the start of our CMVA Collective Ambition- Spring Showcase from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Come swing by our 2026 CMVA Spring Showcase, COLLECTIVE AMBITION.

This event takes place in the Hilltop Theatre at 111 W Davis Avenue in Weatherford on Thursday April 30th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm and on Friday May 1st from 9am to 5pm.

The show features work from across many of the classes and programs in our department. Ever wondered what students in CMVA are up to? This is a chance to see a small glimpse of what we do every day.

Film, Theatre, Strategic Communication, Graphic Design, Illustration, Art Education, and more will all have examples of class work, student projects, and research out for the public to enjoy.

The SWOSU Creative Media & Visual Arts End-of-Year Banquet was held this past Thursday. It is one of our favorite nights!

It’s always a joy to come together, share a great meal, and celebrate the incredible community we’ve built with our students, faculty, alumni, and friends.

This year, we were especially honored to welcome alumnus Chantry Banks (Class of 2004, Communication Arts/Theatre), now Director of Museums and Historic Sites for the Oklahoma Historical Society, as our keynote speaker. His insights and experience were generously shared and received.

The evening was dedicated to recognizing outstanding student achievement through awards, honors, and scholarships. We are so proud of the hard work, creativity, and dedication our students bring to our program every day.

A special thank you to the Stafford Air & Space Museum for their continued partnership and for always doing such an excellent job hosting this event—we truly appreciate all that you do to make the night so memorable.

Here’s to another wonderful year and to all the artists, storytellers, and creators who make it so special. 🎉

We are so excited and proud that Dr. Joel Kendall--long time professor and former Chair of our department--has been named the President of Southwestern.

We can't wait to keep working with you in this new role!

Dr. Joel Kendall has been selected as president of Southwestern Oklahoma State University by the Regional University System of Oklahoma Board of Regents.

After serving as interim president since January, Kendall steps into the role with a long history at SWOSU and across Oklahoma higher education. Since joining the university in 1998 as a communications instructor, he has served as department chair, associate provost, and provost and vice president for academic affairs.

During his leadership at SWOSU, he has supported the growth of academic programs in fields such as engineering physics & technology, healthcare, and education, while also working with partners to expand opportunities for students beyond the classroom.

As president, he will continue guiding the university’s academic direction and its role in serving students, communities, and workforce needs across western Oklahoma.

Congratulations to Dr. Kendall on being named president of SWOSU! 💙

We were proud to once again attend Oklahoma Film and Music Day at the Capitol on April 7th.

This event, hosted by the Oklahoma Film + Music Office in partnership with Cherokee Film, the Oklahoma City Film & Creative Industries Office, and the Tulsa Office of Film, Music, Arts & Culture, has become a favorite of ours. This year, Dr. Patrick Julian and Dr. Matt Dorr were our attendees.

This annual event brings together legislators, industry professionals, and creative organizations from across the state to showcase the growing impact of Oklahoma’s film and music industries and the strength of our combined creative economy.

We’ve loved attending this event over the past few years and watching Oklahoma’s film industry continue to grow. SWOSU is proud to be part of that momentum. Our Communication Arts degree with a Film & Live Entertainment emphasis offers hands-on production experience, preparing students to enter the industry with real-world skills and confidence.

Thank you to State Representatives Anthony Moore and Nick Archer for taking the time to connect with us. We appreciate your support of arts education and creative industries in Oklahoma.
