Sometimes when you are in the thick of it, it's hard to remember that the sun will continue to rise and that life will always find a way. It's been a hard week here on the farm. A week that makes you question if any of it is worth it.
But the love and outreach from our community has really kept us going. Reading everyone's comments about how much they love the farm, getting your phone calls and seeing your understanding is truly a blessing and you are the reason we keep going.
So what's exactly happening on the farm? This spring has been pretty crazy. With temperature swings from 85 to 25 the peonies shot out of the ground fast and froze even faster. A peony can typically handle a frost or two, but we had over 2 weeks of frost every night. The shoots were freezing at the ground level, rotting, and causing a fungus to spread (turning the buds and leaves black!) If the fungus is left on the flower then the whole plant can get sick and die off. Now multiply that by over 1500+ peonies and we had a HUGE problem. Farmer Suzie has really been the power house on the farm-this week and every week! This week she have been cutting off all the dead (Over 12 bags!) to stop the spread and trying to salvage what she can. With the help of Agricair, she sprayed all of the fields to stop the fungus from spreading and it seems to have helped! She still has a few long days ahead of her but we are hopefully on the up and up.
With all that being said- we are hopefully that we will have SOME flowers that survived so keep your eyes peeled (and your fingers crossed!!) for a flower popup in a few weeks.
Note: Refunds for the Garden party have been issued- they may take 7 days to get to you!
