The succulent family known as Crassula is a diverse genus of about 250 species. Crassulas tend to take care of themselves. It’s the perfect plant for the beginner It is said, “They laugh off neglect and abuse.” The one everyone is familiar with is the Jade plant, Crassula ovata.
Crassulas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade and bloom twice a year, once in spring and again in summer.
Crassulas prefer fast-draining soil. They don’t need much water because they store it in their leaves. They don’t want to sit in wet soil. The roots will be unhappy and eventually rot. When you water, give them a good drenching then allow the soil to dry out. During the really hot months of summer, Crassulas go dormant and need even less water.
They are slow growers, so little maintenance is required. If they start stretching, reaching for light, find them a new spot with optimum light and don’t be afraid to cut them back and start over, preferably cut above the leaflets (where the leaf comes out of the stem).
One of my personal favorites is Crassula pellucida subsp. marginalis ‘Variegata,' often found in hanging baskets. It has heart-shaped leaves in variegated pink, cream and green colors. — Jayme, Nursery Manager
The nursery is open 10am to 2pm on Wednesdays; please call before coming out.
