💙How to Set a Formal Table: The Basics 💙

A formal table setting is all about elegance, symmetry, and thoughtful placement to reflect the courses being served. Begin with a clean, pressed tablecloth or placemat as your foundation. At the center of each place setting, start with a charger plate, which acts as a decorative base. Layer the dinner plate on top, followed by a salad plate and/or a soup bowl, depending on the menu.

To the left of the plate, place the napkin (folded neatly or in a napkin ring) with the salad fork outside and the dinner fork closest to the plate. On the right, set the dinner knife (blade facing in), followed by the soup spoon and any specialty utensils (like a fish knife) in order of use—outside to in.

Above the plate, place the dessert spoon or fork horizontally. The bread plate (if used) goes above the forks with a butter knife laid across it.

For glassware, place the water glass directly above the knives, with the white wine glass slightly to the right and the red wine glass (if served) behind or beside it.

Finally, add a place card above the plates for a personal touch, and keep any centerpiece or florals low to allow for conversation.

Hope you find this helpful for your next gathering.
💙 Lillian Grey

The True Magic of Hospitality Is in the Details

The most memorable moments in hospitality
Aren’t always the grand gestures

They’re the small details
The thoughtful touches
The quiet moments of care

The guest didn’t expect it
But they’ll never forget it

A napkin refolded
A dish remembered
A genuine compliment
A favorite table without asking

These are the moments that create emotional connection

They make the guest feel seen
They make them feel valued
They make them feel like they matter

That is the true magic of hospitality

It’s not loud
It’s not showy
It’s intentional
It’s consistent

And it lives in the small details your team is trained to notice

Teach your staff to see what others miss
To act before being asked
To care when no one’s looking

That’s how you create the kind of experience people talk about…

And come back for again and again

"Caviar is 'moving from elite delicacy to playful lifestyle statement,' says this year’s Hospitality Trends Report from Elite Catering + Event Professionals (ECEP), a global network of leaders from top catering and hospitality organizations. Think roaming caviar carts and pairings with 'nostalgic favorites like tater tots, spaghetti and deviled eggs.' It’s all about over-the-top moments that turn everyday bites into memory-makers."

Whether it was hosting live music onboard the canal boat or imagining sculptures and murals that could bring to life the story of Georgetown, arts and culture have always been a part of our mission at Georgetown Heritage.

At the beginning of 2025 the Georgetown Heritage Board of Directors decided that the time was right to lean into the arts as a way to embrace our commitment to neighborhood vibrancy.

Our partners at the Georgetown BID have been leading the way in planning and executing arts projects for the past decade, and this year they have provided funding for one part-time staff position at Georgetown Heritage to focus on these efforts.

We are excited to have more arts and culture events and programs coming your way soon - including an event announcement in the coming days!
