Why are white lilies the most popular funeral flower?

White lilies are the most commonly used funeral flowers because they symbolize:
* Peace
* Purity
* Reverence
* Restored innocence of the soul
* Resurrection and eternal life (in Christian traditions)

They’re visually calm, elegant, and appropriate across many cultures and religions, which helps explain their widespread use. Additionally, on a practical level, they have a strong, pleasant fragrance (can cover odors), last well in arrangements & are versatile alone or worked into ornate displays. Lilies continue to be a lilies powerful, comforting symbol during times of loss.

During the American Civil War, embalming moved from a rare practice to a vital necessity. With thousands of soldiers dying far from home, preservation allowed bodies to be transported back to grieving families, reshaping attitudes toward death and remembrance. This period marked the beginning of modern embalming in the United States, transforming funeral practices and the way a nation honored its fallen. Abraham Lincoln’s death dramatically accelerated the popularity and public acceptance of embalming in the United States.

After his assassination in 1865, Lincoln’s body was embalmed so it could travel by funeral train over nearly 1,600 miles, stopping in multiple cities over two weeks. Millions of Americans viewed his well-preserved body, many for the first time seeing an embalmed co**se that still appeared lifelike. This highly visible, national event demonstrated embalming’s effectiveness on an unprecedented scale.

As a result, embalming became associated with honor, respect, and modern science rather than secrecy or experimentation. Families increasingly requested embalming for transportation, viewing, and funerals, and undertakers began to professionalize the practice. Lincoln’s funeral is widely credited with moving embalming from a wartime necessity into a mainstream American funeral custom.
