Our historic building began its journey in 1839 as the General Post Office, designed by Robert Mills, the very architect behind the Washington Monument.

It expanded in 1866 under Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the U.S. Capitol dome, becoming the city's first all-marble building.

Over the years, these halls witnessed the birth of the city's telegraph communication and served as a hub of civil service. After a meticulous restoration that preserved its soaring skylights and grand corridors, it officially opened its doors as Kimpton Hotel Monaco Washington DC in 2002.
