Tonight and tomorrow night only!
BMDT presents Eternal Roots representing the unbreakable cultural, spiritual, and historical bonds of the Black diaspora. Through dance, we honor and recognize the threads of Black ancestry, resilience, and artistic expression. It is an eternal dance of life and spirit, where each breath and every step echoes through time and space, linking us to one another and the universe itself.” The evening features the work of Prof. Alfreda Davis, Krystal Bulter, and Jaron Gilchrist, along with student choreography.

Friday Music Series presents André Mehmari
Nov 15, 12:30-1:30
McNeir Hqll

To music lovers and critics in Brazil, André Mehmari is a musical wonder and a source of national pride. For his work as a pianist and composer, he won the 2023 Grand Prize awarded by Brazil’s leading music journal. To the ear, imagine a meeting of Mozart and Keith Jarrett in Brazil, Mozart for the intensity of his creation, Jarrett for his relationship to improvisation at the modern piano. His standards, however, are the compositions that comprise what he calls “The Great Brazilian Songbook,” works written at the same time that the Great American Songbook was created, equally rich in lyricism and sublimity. All of the world’s songbooks and literature are his realm, a borderless inspiration expressed in his compositions and improvisations. The latter takes special form in his solo piano performances where he invites the audience to give him suggestions which, in the moment, he spins into an improvised suite. He invites you to come to the concert with the music you love and offer it for the creation of these one-time-only but forever memorable creations. Come hear one of the greatest musical minds of our time.

Department of Performing Arts at Lavender Graduation! 💜💜💜💜💜
Congrats to our very own Stanley Bahorek (Community Engagement and Development Manager) for being awarded the Staff Commitment to the LGBTQ Community at the Lavender Graduation last week. He was awarded for leadership, vision, and commitment to the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning communities at Georgetown University. TPST Major, Shakeer Hood was also awarded Outstanding Champion to the LGBTQ Community for the courage to work for equity and equality for the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning communities at Georgetown University.
Ollie Henry (recent associate director of Hurricane Diane) was a keynote speaker at the event and gave the senior reflection speech. Many of our DPA students walked and received lavender tassels. Our amazing student staff member, Rhys Lossman attended to cheer on our peers!
What a wonderful achievement for all! 💜💜💜💜💜

Join us in Gonda Theater next Thursday where music major In Devine will present his capstone project. Fish in Water is an experimental city symphony short film. The project explores our relationship with the natural world, highlights the irony of the bureaucratization of nature, and urges us to question the repetitive and rushed industrial essence of our cities. We often don’t notice the world around us. In the words of well known sound designer Walter Murch, paraphrasing an often cited proverb, “Fish are the last to become aware of the water in which they swim.” Taken from his foreword to Michel Chion’s Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen (1994), Murch claims that as sound technology advances, we take sound for granted. Inspired by early city symphony films like The City by Steiner and Van D**e, the work of Shirley Clarke, nature documentaries such as Koyaanisqatsi, and the experimental film work of Mary Lattimore, Fish in Water features field recordings, footage from throughout the D.C area, an original synth composition, and silence.
