Have you ever wondered about this building on the 700 block of M Street, S.E. at the Navy Yard? It was built in 1891 when Frederick Douglass was living across the river in Anacostia. This was the place where the D.C. streetcars turned around at the Navy Yard.

This year, we’re hosting the Douglass Birthday Celebration here, now called Capital Turnaround, on Saturday, February 11th at 2:00 pm. Beginning at 12:30 pm before the main program, we’ll be doing short ranger talks about this place, streetcars in the era of Frederick Douglass, and how Douglass had an interest in local streetcars.

Learn more about the event here: Frederick Douglass Birthday Celebration.
