Pretty cool to see how wrestling comes full circle. From youth tournaments across Southern California to the NCAA Championships, many of these 2026 California NCAA Division I qualifiers likely crossed paths years ago competing on the same mats in local associations like ours. Long weekends at tournaments, countless hours in the gym and battles that started when they were just kids.

That’s what makes this sport special, watching wrestlers grow from the youth circuit to representing programs across the country on the NCAA stage.

Congratulations to all the California wrestlers competing at NCAAs this year. Southern California wrestling is proud of you.

In honor of the winning league finals: A little California Grapplers history.

Following the close of SGV Kids WC, California Grapplers stepped forward and began writing its own chapter. This league championship was one of the early milestones that showed the strength of the families, coaches and athletes behind the program.

Take a second and scan the photo.
You’ll see future coaches, leaders, and mentors, many still shaping wrestling in our area today.

More than a team picture. It’s a snapshot of a community continuing forward.

Years of sacrifice, early mornings and trust in the process, the Lazaro family continues to raise the standard.

With Coach Roy leading the way as a father, mentor and constant supporter, the impact is undeniable. Lani paved the path and now competes at Menlo College. Sumaya, a senior, returns to the State tournament as a title contender at 140 (yes 140… not 240 — still recovering from that typo 🤦‍♂️), showing the resilience that’s defined her journey….And now Sophia steps onto the State stage for the first time as a freshman contender at 105, adding another chapter to a family built on toughness and consistency.

From youth tournaments to the biggest stage in California, this moment has been earned. Best of luck this weekend at State, the community is proud.

League finals doesn’t happen without leadership, structure, and people who genuinely care about the kids.

As we wrap up the season, we want to recognize Coach Jose “Zero” Garcia - our league president - for the countless hours he dedicates to growing and organizing youth wrestling across Southern California. His vision has always been simple: create opportunities, run quality events and give kids and families the best experience possible while helping them fall in love with the sport.

Behind the scenes he wears many hats. Leadership isn’t always easy, sometimes that means enforcing rules, making tough decisions and being the one who holds the standard…but it always comes from a place of protecting the athletes, preserving the integrity of the sport and continuing to improve the league.

From building structure within our competitions to contributing internationally through his involvement with the Mexican National Team, Coach Zero’s impact continues to reach far beyond the mats.

We’re grateful for the leadership, the effort, and the constant push to grow. Thank you Coach Zero, looking forward to continuing to build and improve together next season.
