The peonies are beginning to make their appearance and they do not disappoint! This is one of my earlier varieties. It’s finally in its third year making it a more productive plant.

Last fall I added 12 new varieties to the farm. I’m documenting when they bloom, height, and color. My hope is to offer peony subscriptions for a few weeks at the beginning of June when they’re fully mature.

Last chance to get your dahlia tubers!

This week is the ideal time to plant your tubers. Flowers will bloom from August until the first frost in October. All varieties grow great in our local climate. Dahlia varieties make great cut flowers and look beautiful in a vase.

How is your gardening season starting out so far? I was hoping to have some nice weather this weekend to prep the dahlia beds. Thankfully the rain stopped today and I was able to get some work done.

I pulled the last of the tulip bulbs and amended the soil with mushroom compost and manure. Then tilled the bed and raked two long rows in preparation for the dahlia tubers to be planted this week.

I had my friendly Bernedoodle pals Theo and Ruby to keep me company (they may have been a little too interested in helping with the tilling. This time of year I have to be extra diligent about containing their digging to the shade garden on the hill).

The forecast this week looks great for planting dahlia tubers. I should have some extras available for sale. Once I get everything planted I’ll post the remaining tubers.

Happy gardening everyone!

How do I extend tulip season for several weeks?

The answer lies in the bulbs. When harvesting tulips I pull tulips with the bulbs attached. Since bulbs serve as the tulips food source they continue to feed the flower, keeping it fresh.

Next I store the whole flower with bulb in the fridge. This essentially causes the flower to go dormant, allowing them to be stored for up to 1.5 weeks in this state.

When it’s time to prepare a bouquet, I snip off the bulb and place the stem in a bucket of clean water. At this stage the leaves are limp. They need about 2 hours to hydrate and return to their original state.

If you’ve ever wanted to harvest your tulips to enjoy for a later date, this is a great way to extend the life of your tulips. It works great for upcoming events…like Mother’s Day! 😊💐

Today wraps up the tulip subscription. 🌷

For the past 3 weeks, I’ve enjoyed curating a variety of tulips in many shapes and colors. My absolute favorite tulips featured each week is the parrot tulip. As they unfurl the colors brighten and petals resemble feathers.

I hope everyone enjoyed the tulips as much as I did. Even though tulip season is almost complete there are so many flowers to look forward to.

The next subscription starts in July and features lilies and roses. Following in the fall is the dahlia subscription.

Stay tuned for more details about the July subscription. I will be posting the signup sheet soon.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend everyone! 💐

This time of year the bright pastels are celebrated but I still love the moody vibes of the deeper burgundy red.

Another beautiful tulip included in subscriber bouquets this week is called blushing parrot.

The soft yellow petals brushed with strokes of magenta pink glow in the daylight.

I love curating a collection of tulips that captivate attention. Today I found myself staring at the intricate details of these tulips while drinking my morning coffee. For me flowers bring a sense of calm and relaxation.

This week subscribers received parrot tulips in their bouquets. I find this variety mesmerizing. As the petals unfurl the edges reveal intricate swaths of contrasting colors. The outlines look like feathers of a delicate bird.

Watching parrot tulips mature in the vase is an experience you don’t want to miss.
