The biggest mistake couples make when building must-play lists 👇

As a wedding DJ, I completely understand why couples make huge must-play lists.

It’s your wedding.
You want to hear songs you love.
That part makes total sense.

But sometimes couples accidentally build playlists that are WAY too specific to their own personal taste.

And that can become a problem once dancing starts.

Because a wedding dance floor isn’t just about the bride & groom…

It’s about creating moments for 150+ guests at the same time.

I’ve seen must-play lists filled with super niche songs, deep cuts, slow indie tracks, or music that only a small group of people in the room actually know.

And while those songs might mean a lot personally, they don’t always translate well to a packed dance floor.

That’s why I always tell couples this:

There’s a HUGE difference between “songs you love” and “songs that work for a party.”

And honestly, the best weddings usually find a balance between the two.

You can absolutely include personal songs and unique moments…

But if the goal is keeping people dancing all night, the music also has to connect with the crowd as a whole.

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is save certain songs for cocktail hour, dinner, or smaller moments instead of peak dancing time.

Because once the dance floor loses momentum, it can be really hard to rebuild it.

A great wedding playlist isn’t just about personal taste…

It’s about understanding how people react together in a party environment.

As a wedding DJ, there are SO many things we’re paying attention to that guests never even realize 👇

Most people think DJs are just standing there picking songs.

But during a wedding, I’m constantly watching the room and analyzing what’s happening in real time.

I’m watching who’s dancing.
Who just walked onto the dance floor.
Who’s starting to leave.
Which age groups are reacting to certain songs.
Who’s singing along.
Who looks tired.
Who’s hyping everybody else up.

I’m also paying attention to things that have nothing to do with music.

Is the bar pulling people away from the dance floor?
Are guests still waiting on food?
Is the room too bright?
Did the timeline run late and kill momentum?
Did the bride & groom leave the room?
Is the energy building or starting to stall out?

All of those things affect the party WAY more than people realize.

Sometimes guests think a DJ magically knows the perfect next song.

But honestly, a huge part of DJing is reading human behavior.

A good wedding DJ is constantly making small adjustments all night long based on what the crowd is doing in that exact moment.

Sometimes one song can completely change the energy of the room.
And sometimes one wrong decision can empty the dance floor.

That’s why wedding DJing is way more mental than most people think.

We’re basically trying to manage the energy of 150+ people in real time without anybody noticing it’s happening.

As a wedding DJ, I can confidently say that cocktail hour music matters WAY more than people realize 👇

A lot of people think cocktail hour music is just background noise while guests grab drinks and wait for dinner.

But cocktail hour actually helps set the tone for the entire night.

This is the first moment where guests are really settling into the wedding atmosphere.

People are arriving from the ceremony.
They’re getting drinks.
Starting conversations.
Meeting other guests.
Taking photos.
Exploring the venue.

And the music playing during that time heavily affects how the wedding FEELS.

Good cocktail hour music creates energy without overwhelming the room.

It helps the wedding feel classy, fun, relaxed, and intentional all at the same time.

Bad cocktail hour music can make the entire wedding feel awkward before the party even starts.

If the music is too aggressive too early, it can feel chaotic.
If it’s too slow or boring, the wedding can start feeling low-energy immediately.

That’s why I put a lot more thought into cocktail hour music than most people probably realize.

I’m usually trying to create a vibe that feels upbeat and social while still leaving room for conversation.

And honestly, cocktail hour also gives DJs a TON of information about the crowd.

You start seeing what age groups are there.
What type of energy the guests have.
How outgoing the crowd is.
What styles of music people react to naturally.

All of that helps shape the rest of the night.

A great wedding party usually doesn’t start at open dancing…

It starts the second guests walk into cocktail hour.

The difference between Club DJs and Wedding DJs is WAY bigger than people realize 👇

A lot of people assume that if somebody can DJ at a club, they can automatically DJ a wedding too.

But honestly, they are completely different skillsets.

At a club, people are showing up EXPECTING to dance.

The music is usually centered around one style or vibe.
The crowd is often closer in age.
And everybody is there to specifically GET DOWN on the dance floor.

Weddings are the exact opposite.

As a Wedding DJ, you’re trying to entertain multiple generations at the same time.

You might have grandparents, college friends, little kids, coworkers, and hardcore party people all sharing the same dance floor.

And somehow you have to make ALL of them feel included throughout the night.

That’s what makes Wedding DJing so difficult.

You’re constantly balancing different energies, different music tastes, and different expectations all at once.

One minute you’re making formal announcements.
The next minute you’re coordinating with photographers and planners.
Then 10 minutes later you’re trying to turn the room into a nightclub.

And unlike clubs, weddings usually don’t give you unlimited time to build energy either.

You only have a few hours to create moments people will remember forever.

That’s why being a great Wedding DJ is way more than just mixing songs.

It’s crowd reading.
Energy control.
MCing.
Timeline management.
People skills.
And knowing how to create a party for people who normally would NEVER all listen to the same music together.

That’s what makes Wedding DJing such a unique challenge.

There’s a HUGE difference between a Spotify playlist and a real DJ 👇

A lot of people think DJing is just showing up with speakers and pressing play on a playlist.

And honestly… that’s exactly what some DJs do.

But a real DJ is doing way more behind the scenes than most people realize.

We’re constantly watching the crowd and analyzing the room in real time.

Who’s dancing?
Who’s leaving the floor?
What age group is reacting right now?
Is the energy building or starting to dip?
Do we stay in this genre longer or pivot into something else?

Every decision matters.

Sometimes I’ll have the next 3 songs planned out in my head… and then completely change directions because I notice the crowd reacting differently than expected.

That’s why DJ is so different compared to just listening to a Spotify playlist.

A playlist can’t read body language.
A playlist can’t notice when the bridesmaids are starting to lose energy.
A playlist can’t recognize that the older crowd is ready for a singalong moment.
A playlist can’t save a dance floor when a song misses.

A real DJ can.

And honestly, mixing songs together is only a small part of it.

The biggest skill is knowing HOW to control the energy of the room all night long without people even realizing you’re doing it.

That’s why two DJs can play a lot of the same songs, but one party feels unforgettable while another one feels awkward or dies early.

Anybody can hit play.

Keeping 200 people dancing for hours is a completely different skillset.
