Did you know reindeer grow a brand-new set of antlers every single year? 🦌✨

Right now many of our herd are growing their antlers in what is called “velvet.” Velvet is a soft, fuzzy covering filled with blood vessels and nutrients that helps feed the growing antlers. During this stage, antlers can grow incredibly fast — sometimes up to an inch per day!

Growing a full set of antlers is a long process that usually takes several months. Most reindeer begin growing antlers late winter, with growth continuing through summer before the velvet is shed in early fall.

One of the most amazing things about reindeer is that BOTH males and females can grow antlers, making them unique compared to many other deer species.

Watching this transformation happen each year is one of our favorite parts of farm life and such a wonderful reminder of how incredible these animals truly are. In the next few weeks we look forward to reintroducing you to each member of our herd and getting the chance to see how much antler they have already grown this year. Follow along with us in the weeks to come to check out all their progress.

Check out Winter's rack last year in velvet and hard antler. His antlers this year are already this size and he still has months left of growing left. We love antlers around here and can't wait to show you what's been growing here on the farm❤️

😳Current state of the farm - HAIRY!!

Literally HAIR is flying around EVERYWHERE !

⁉️Did you know reindeer grow one of the warmest coats in the animal kingdom each winter? ❄️🦌
As the temperatures begin to rise, our herd naturally starts shedding that thick winter coat to prepare for the warmer months ahead. Underneath all that fluffy winter hair is a sleek new summer coat that helps keep them comfortable during spring and summer on the farm.

♥️So even though the herd looks a little rugged right now we know that soon they will be sleek and shiny again and that this is all part of the seasonal transformation! ☀️🌿

💙Hang in there Sven, you will be our handsome boy again soon after that winter coat is gone. On the bright side though- you are rocking those sideburns 🤣

😎Reindeer love all forms of water- ice, snow and especially water that is in their pools in the summertime. Sprinkles has already figured out how to splash and play to cool down. She’s living her best summer life♥️

🎀Poor Everest, she’s realizing today that maybe BANGS aren’t for everyone 🤣

🦌Shedding is in full swing here at the farm so luckily this look won’t last forever. Reindeer shed out their entire winter coats to be cool for the summertime. Soon our light colored reindeer will be dark brown in color and much cooler.

♥️Thankfully her bangs will be short lived. Hopefully the other reindeer aren’t laughing and calling her names 😜🤣🤪 Shedding brings on all sorts of fun new hair styles here at the farm

Thank you to every family, friend, and guest who came out to spend Baby Days with us on the farm. These slower spring days are some of our favorites because they give us the chance to truly connect with our guests, share stories, answer questions, and watch special memories unfold between families and our baby animals.

Seeing children light up while meeting baby reindeer, cuddling kittens, visiting the chicks, and loving on all the newest members of the farm reminds us exactly why we do this. These moments are so meaningful to our family, and we are incredibly thankful you chose to spend part of your weekend making memories with us.
