This picture has so much value to me as a farmer and gardener even more than the fields of flowers that will follow. First; husband. He’s the most important asset in my life plus he’s great at all the mechanical and engineering projects where I’m better at the grow. Second, though, is Infrastructure. It’s what streamlines my time and makes my life and work so much easier! We started a HUGE irrigation project in 2024 and finally installed an automated sprinkler system plus robot mower for our lawn, had a hiatus year last year with a family event and are back to work this season to complete a 24 zone system for all our planted areas on the property. Farm and landscape. It’s a huge undertaking. But it will automate ALL my watering. We were operating on a much smaller zonal system previously that worked incredibly, it was just way too small, so I was having to feather in lots of hoses, sprinklers operating off timers at the hose bib etc. And the set up and tear down every season was such a time suck. Now it’ll be an app on my phone for the entire property. This right here is a dream that’s finally coming true!

Flower life is so fulfilling and enjoyable and I have so many awesome friends in this business. Today I’m taking inventory on my mums, I lost a few overwinter that I hadn’t ordered so I reached out to my dear friend, Tamara Bliley, who owns Crown Mums. Tamara is awesome and if you are a farmer or grow mums you should know her. She is an encyclopedia of mums plus she sells over 600 cultivars from her business and tons are really rare that you can’t find anywhere else. Stunners. I texted her, “I need Klamath Falls, do you have any available?” Her response, “I have a 4” for you.” Then she responded with a ton of LOL’s and emojis and corrected herself, “ I have a 4” pot of Klamath Falls for you.” We bantered about not bragging about 4”, clarity in writing and a bunch of other shenanigans but my neighbors must think I’m nuts barking out laughter in the greenhouse when I’m completely alone. But I’m really not alone. I’ve got great flower friends, I’m looking at you Tamara, Marilyn, Jennifer, Kelly and Sarah:) You all make me feel connected even when I’m working solo.
Pic is today’s peony harvest. I’ll do this for the next few days then they’re headed to Main Street Floral Company! I think Marilyn will be running a sale on full bunches as I do have them coming out of my ears. The Kansas is my personal fave, very bright magenta. Happy Spring!

Whew! Mother’s Day week is a wrap! The last few weeks have been a doozy; I had carpal tunnel surgery on my primary hand which naturally slowed my roll on all things farm like weeding, planting, harvesting and let’s not forget basics like making dinner and showering which just took so much longer than usual with lots of awkwardness. Then my clutch of emus got their first outdoor run time and got respiratory infection somehow and had to do a two week course of antibiotics. Lastly, I both sell and freelance at my best wholesale customer’s shop every Mother’s Day week at which was a weird one with one reliable hand. But always so much fun with such a great group of friends even if I was gimpy. Lastly, my family got together and cleaned out the pool for me on Mother’s Day. It’s my little slice of heaven on hot days to keep me going all summer!

I got dna results this morning on the first emu clutch so I have 5 sexed chicks available and ready to go home! My second hatch got a trip from the hatcher out to the brooder in this high brow cardboard box! Their dna tests got mailed off today so they should be ready to go in two weeks. Last season I only had one white the entire season although I didn’t hatch a ton as we were on vacation for three weeks which really threw my schedule. This year I had the ratio I was expecting so I’ve got four white chicks between the two clutches! It’s so fun having a multitude of colors.😍

My husband has a 3-D printer and found a mason bee house that he printed for me, I’m pretty excited about it! I bought a couple from Costco years ago but some of the tubes are bamboo so I can’t clean or check for mites and I’ve had issues with something pulling the cardboard tubes out of my other houses and chewing them and making a general mess. My fave for years has been the wood that I can break apart and pull cocoons which is how this new one is styled except I can wash these! It also has a little tray at the top to store all the cocoons once I clean them, I can pop into the fridge even until I’m ready to release. And it has a guard against birds, raccoons, cats or whatever is chewing my cardboard tubes. It’s mason bee season right now, I can see them flying around so I’m crossing fingers they will use it this year!

This year has been one of my favorite springs ever! It has been such pleasant weather for planting and weeding and my spring blooms are amazing! I took gorgeous ranunculus to Main Street Floral Company this morning including some creamy yellow butterflies that are at least 18” in length. Stem length is crazy on these greenhouse plants! And the daffodils just keep pumping out new blooms as I do have several dozen varieties built for succession harvests. For those pass their cut date, they’re making my yard look amazing and their sweet smell is amazing. My postal driver handed me a package of dahlia tubers last week and said my deliveries are her fave because it’s so pretty and smells awesome:) I’m so glad spring has arrived!

My husband sent this to me this morning and I just have to say, I appreciate the support. I feel seen, how about you?

This sweet chick is out and super healthy! It beat all the others by about a day and a half and may be getting special treatment of movie marathons in my lap under a heated blanket so it’s not lonely. Maybe….

My favorite part of raising emu are the chicks❤️
