Honored that Captain "Gus" Nikolas Kodros spotted my Maine photo of the gorgeous 58 ft. "Lazy Jack II" and requested it's use to promote one of the most desired Schooner sailing experiences in Maine.

Ok. Now even the untrained eye can see that both of these are composites. I mean.. the bridge, on the Rappahannock River (in Virginia) the (Robert O. Norris Jr. bridge.. no kidding!) was really there when I recently sailed under it but the sky just needed a little help. Lol. Software at play! Which one do YOU like? Just for reference, I included the original.

Even through the lens of my camera, I know when it happens. And it’s awesome.

The Blue Angels at ready before their show while the Vintage machines show their stuff.
Lynchburg, Virginia 2011

I did this with a 70-200 f2.8 Nikon Lens 200 1/250th.
I shot wide open and used a 2X teleconverter bringing my reach to 400mm .6
I would have been much happier with a sharper image of the older plane, but "Back in the day".. it was difficult to shoot at higher ISO because of the noise it would introduce in the shadows. Noise reduction software was not what it is today. This resulted in a shutter speed that was too slow for the combination I was using. And it was handheld. I was able to save the shot by shooting him coming straight at me which minimized his movement.

Today's Mirrorless cameras can reach astronomical ISO's enabling much faster shutter speeds. My Sony a9 can shoot above 204,000 iso and top shutter speed of 1/32000/sec. Electronic "noise" is also now almost becoming a thing of the past.
And it can do it at 20 frames per second.
We've come a long way since the darkroom.

One of the things I love to do most on foul weather days like we've had recently is to go back through some of my photos and look for small details I've captured with my camera that I might have missed along the way. It's amazing the small gems I have uncovered. I guess you would call it "going back to smell the roses".

It's true that I have a penchant for reminiscence. But in this case, I see it as lessons about life and photography and a reminder to live each day to the fullest capacity. I also believe it is true that some days can overflow with so many great or special moments that an abundance of those can be saved for another time to be enjoyed indefinitely. I am grateful that Photography heaps upon me unlimited chances to learn again from those days that were just too full of those moments for me to fully realize the first time around.

I don't quite remember the name of the small mountain creek pictured here deep in the Great Smoky Mountains. But I do vividly remember the moment as I crossed a small foot bridge above the creek and happened to glance down far below at the golden sunlight being reflected in is slow moving water and how the rocks in the creek formed a perfect border to the pool of gold yet uncaptured. I set up my tripod right there on the bridge and clicked the shutter for what seemed like an hour until the golden glow was gone. It was time well spent.

"Don't shoot what it looks like.. Shoot what it feels like" David Alan Harvey

Years ago, when I used to teach Photography and some associated courses at Virginia-Western's Daleville, Virginia campus, four out of the five courses I designed for the curriculum were of technical nature. Going in, that was the part of photography that most newcomers to the Craft (the students) felt it was that they needed the most help with....

Working on a New technique to blend textures in photographs. No filters here..just some brush work in PS with a textured layer overlay. But you do have to be selective on which photos you choose for the work. Hope y’all like it.
