We have people ask us all the time what does Gullah mean??
The Gullah community, also known as Gullah Geechee, refers to the descendants of enslaved Africans who primarily lived in the Lowcountry region of the southeastern United States, encompassing coastal areas and the Sea Islands of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Here’s my great great grandparents with one of their children.
I’m so proud that I come from a beautiful strong legacy.
My great great grandfather, Samson Read, was a slave from Georgetown, SC who joined the fight in the civil war on Hilton Head island.
He’s a hero in that aspect, but he also along with his Regiment protested being paid unfair wages. They were supposed to get paid $13 a month, but received $7 a month. He had to testify in court for the defense of his Sgt. Williams Walker.
He listed as Sampson Reed on Afro American civil War memorial in Washington DC on plaque B-38. Thanks to all of those unknown brave men and Women who we should be proud to call our ancestors!
