As the Caribbean continues to face natural disasters like Hurricane Melissa, and man-made disasters like cyber attacks, the importance of symposiums like the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) has never been clearer.

OHS professionals play a critical role in planning for worst-case scenarios, ensuring the safety of teams, infrastructure, and communities. Today is Day 3 of the Occupational Health & Safety Symposium, where regional OHS experts share experiences, strengthen response strategies, and discuss how to keep our energy sector safe, resilient, and prepared.

The keynote for the 2025 OHS Symposium was delivered under the topic of, “Building Resilience and Energy-Based Safety in the Power Sector,” by Dr. Martin Forde, Assistant Dean of Research, Professor, Department of Public Health & Preventive Medicine, St. George’s University.

Dr. Ford challenged delegates to rethink safety beyond compliance, emphasizing performance, prevention, and resilience as the new standards for occupational health and safety. From the impacts of climate change to the rise of Energy-Based Safety (EBS), the message was clear:
🦺 Protect People → Protect Power → Protect Progress.
🦺 The first line of defense in energy resilience is the employee, not the grid.
🦺 OHS, Environmental Health, and Climate Resilience now form a single operational continuum.
🦺Investing in safety systems is investing in business continuity and regional stability.
🦺 Safety is not the absence of accidents, it’s the presence of resilience.

Safety leadership must evolve to integrate climate adaptation, employee physical and mental wellbeing, and proactive risk management.

Thank you Dr, Forde for an excellent message!

The CARILEC Disaster Assistance Programme (CDAP) has been fully activated in response to Hurricane Melissa, which impacted Jamaica on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, as a powerful Category 5 storm. CARILEC has quickly mobilized its network to coordinate regional support even as we await the full assessment of damages from JPS

Here's a snapshot of some of what we've being doing behind the scenes:
🔹 CARILEC's Virtual Emergency Operations Centre (VEOC) is now operational; Daily updates are being shared with Utility Disaster Coordinators across the region.
🔹 CARILEC continues to attend CDEMA briefings to share updates from impacted Caribbean Utilities
🔹 Arrangements are underway with CDEMA, Caribbean Airlines and LIAT Air for charter flights to Jamaica for restoration teams.
🔹Several CARILEC member utilities have committed to sending teams and equipment to Jamaica to assist with the rebuilding efforts.

As the region continues to monitor the storm’s impact on Bermuda and The Bahamas, CARILEC remains steadfast in its commitment to regional solidarity and mutual aid across our member utilities.
