Theatre and Performance Studies (TAPS) at GSU considers performing the stories of others, as we

ll as of the self, imperative for initiating and sustaining a dialogue of shared human experience across identities, diversities, and desires. TAPS provides students with an understanding of the role of storytelling on stage and in everyday life, awareness of cultural diversity and civic engagement, as well as heightened communication, leadership, teambuilding, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. The program seeks to create well-rounded students, cultivating creative, critical, collaborative, and compassionate voices that move toward fulfilling careers and meaningful lives. Beyond course work that targets performance technique, application, design, history, analysis, theory, and criticism, students are asked to participate in main stage productions throughout their program of study, providing continued opportunities to enhance their skills. Furthermore, students are encouraged to gain professional experience by participating in internship opportunities throughout the Chicagoland area. Ultimately, TAPS prepares students—as artists, citizens, and scholars—for work in all aspects of theatre, whether onstage, backstage, or in arts administration; for employment in civic engagement, activism, nonprofit organizations, public relations, among others; as well as for graduate study. Meet Aldyn Kellogg—BEETHOVEN in DOG SEES GOD

“Dog Sees God is about a boy trying to deal with grief through the pressures of a high school environment. It sends a message that you should always check up on your friends because they might be going through something and need your help. Rehearsals have been amazing. I’ve learned so much about acting from my director and cast members. The audience can expect a moving adaptation that is sure to bring laughter and tears. Theatre is more than just a cast putting on a show; it is the creation of a community, and we welcome you to ours.”

Meet Eboni Majoney Williams—VAN’S SISTER in DOG SEES GOD

“Dog Sees God explores themes of identity, bullying, mental health, loss of innocence, and existential questioning. It challenges audiences, through a darkly comedic lens, to reflect on childhood’s lasting impact, the consequences of intolerance, and the importance of love and acceptance in a harsh world, while keeping them engaged with deeply human characters they all know and love. The play tackles heavy themes with honesty, and I love how it challenges both the actors and the audience to confront difficult truths. Back in high school, I thought life would always be that way—lonely, painful, and full of anxiety. Every insult, every mean thing people said about me felt like the absolute truth, and I carried those words like weights on my shoulders. I was convinced nothing would ever get better. Dog Sees God hits hard because it mirrors that feeling—the way trauma, bullying, and isolation shape you, make you doubt yourself, and convince you that you’re alone. CB’s world is one where childhood innocence is long gone, and every character is dealing with their own quiet battles, just like so many of us did (and still do).”

Meet Kirstin Palatinus—MARCY in DOG SEES GOD

“Dog Sees God covers so much ground. There are a lot of heavy themes throughout the play, such as mental health and the struggles of high school. It gets us thinking about how our actions (and lack of action) deeply affects others. I had a tough time in high school for many reasons. This story speaks to so many of the challenges I faced when I was young, and it’s been comforting to feel like someone else has gone through similar experiences. I’ve really enjoyed feeling like an ensemble through the rehearsal process. Everyone working on this production has been so amazing. It’s been great getting to know the cast and hearing the different ideas everyone has as we’re discovering our characters. There are some hysterical moments in the script, and laughing together as we work through them has been wonderful. I hope people leave the show feeling inspired to not only treat others with more compassion, but themselves as well.”

Meet Jazmin Butler—TRICIA in DOG SEES GOD

“Dog Sees God speaks on the undercover lives of high schoolers and the issues they face: identity, sexuality, substance abuse, su***de, and so much more. It is a play that digs into the fear of being different. I'm able to connect with the themes of the show personally, but have also learned new viewpoints and insights to what others go through. This is my last show as an undergrad – the finale to my senior year. This is also my first comedy, so this is testing my skills as a TAPS student, stretching me in my craft. As a student in Dr. Santoro’s directing class, it’s been inspiring to watch his vision come to life. I’ve learned that a director’s care and intention are necessary to telling a compelling story on stage. Dog Sees God offers a healthy balance of drama and comedy. While the audience will be hit with real life situations and emotional responses, they will also laugh. I've also learned that humor is an effective way to teach a lesson. I hope our production leaves the audience pondering on change and how it can be made."

Meet Oleg Sabetskii—MATT in DOG SEES GOD

“Dog Sees God explores many issues related to teenagers, such as substance abuse, bullying, homophobia, grief, friendship, and betrayal. Many of the characters are struggling with identity. Matt is Pigpen from the original Peanuts series; he is someone I resonate a lot with. I’ve learned through rehearsals how to capture key moments of my character in the right way. Working with a great time has helped tremendously! Dog Sees God has been a wonderful opportunity to experience acting for the first time in a long time. The audience can expect to feel a roller coaster of emotions. I know many people who are planning to see it, and I look forward to having a good time with them.”

Meet Naeem Frausto—VAN in DOG SEES GOD

“Dog Sees God is my first play. It has been so much fun! Part of our process is to research all aspects of our characters and what that means for us on stage. We also learn about the playwright and, given that this is tied to the Peanuts stories, also about Peanuts creator Charles Schulz. My favorite part has to be the character analysis. It is just so interesting because it feels like I am learning something new about my character every single time I get on stage. I have also learned that a lot of time and effort goes into a play. We are all working together to build this world. Each of us is a part of a puzzle, and it’s not until you put all of the pieces together that you start to really see the big picture. Charlie Brown and the gang may have been kids for more than 50 years, but you're about to see them all grown up. Expect to laugh. Expect to cry.”
