In Mahjong, Hop Toi is a fun, popular lucky superstition. It occurs during the initial deal or tile distribution when a player receives tiles split between two different walls on the table.
For example, if you take the last two stacks from one wall and the first two stacks from the adjacent wall at the corner of the table, you have a Hop Toi.How the Superstition WorksThe Ritual: When a player gets a Hop Toi, they will tap the tiles together or snap their fingers. They often declare, “Hop Toi, bring me joy!” or “I believe!”
The Belief: The superstition is that these “lucky corners” will bless the player with a very strong hand, plenty of Jokers (in American Mahjong), and hopefully a win. Table Etiquette: According to the tradition, other players should never touch another person’s Hop Toi tiles, as it is said to mess with their magic or good luck.
