A long time ago, this festival was a baby. I was just starting out as an activist and did most everything on my own, too stubborn to ask for much-needed help. And organizing this festival meant promoting it as well. That was an adventure I wasn’t ready for. I just didn't realize it.
Along with the plethora of LGBT acts I had listed on my contact sheets, I also really wanted to include local artists. It was important for me that our community realize the scope of support we had at our fingertips even on a local scale. (Knowing that your favorite band across the state line is also an ally is equal parts awesome and comforting.)
One such artist I had at the top of my list was Wick-it the Instigator. I knew he was an artist from TN and that is the extent. (My knowledge of local music has since grown. I promise.)
In order to book Mr. Instigator I needed to contact his agent. Soon I was in touch with a guy named Heath. We emailed back and forth, trading offers and ideas, and he soon figured out that I had no clue what the f**k I was doing.
Once he picked up on this, he very easily could've taken full advantage of my inexperience. But he didn't. Instead, this guy took the time to actually walk me through a crash course in promoting and booking shows. Insanely cool of him and I never got the chance to say thanks. I feel like now more than ever those small things matter. Much obliged Heath.
