It’s that time of year again! We always need more tenors and baritone/bass singers (but especially tenor).
We’re entering into our fourth season, and every year we barely get any interest from these open calls, I think because there are some lingering questions, which I’d love to answer!
Singing with The Tulsa Carolers looks less like singing with a choir, and more like gig work. Yes, we are a collective, but we don’t perform outside of SATB quartets, which are pieced together for each gig by availability.
So a gig comes in, I (Afton, CEO big-bonnet-boss-lady) send out the details, and staff it according to who is available. Otherwise, the only thing that’s required is that you attend two of the group rehearsals in the Fall, which are not paid. You could have anywhere from one to fifteen gigs depending on availability.
There is also the detail about costuming: they are sourced by me, and paid by the individual singer, which is a tax write-off. It’s typically under $100, but if cost is a barrier, I can help. It will be the costume you use year after year.
We have about 70 holiday songs in our book, many of which are original to the group, and you are responsible for learning them.
What do I look for?
I look for equal parts confidence, skill, and charisma.
What do I mean by that?
I need to know that you will perform without hesitation, and that you can carry your part as a vital voice in the a Ca****la quartet, and can entertain an audience. It’s Christmas after all, so joy is baked in!
I also look for professionalism, of course, like being on time, keeping your costume clean and in tact, having your music nearly memorized by your first gig, not losing your music, reliable transportation, good attitude, etc.
I also look for people who have a fairly good amount of availability, especially in the evenings and weekends, from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve.
We have a lot of fun and I like to think that I keep it pretty low-stress. My whole mission with it is to showcase (and bring work to) some of Tulsa’s finest vocal musicians, and most importantly to spread the Joy of the season with the gifts we’ve been given.
