Tonight at El Casino Ballroom TKMA presents the Tucson debut of grammy-nominated Americana roots juggernauts Wood & Wire in a benefit for the Tucson Folk Festival. Local favorites, Ryanhood, will be kicking off our annual El Casino Ballroom fundraiser on February 1 at 7:30 PM! Arizona Daily Star called them a "match made in radio heaven" and we couldn't agree more. Listen to a few of their live performances here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-L7M3NYs4Y
Were you at this show? This framed poster is available in our online auction. Jeb Schoonover says "This poster is from our infamous KXCI Community Radio House Rockin' series at El Casino Ballroom. In 1988 we presented this All-Star Blues R***e which was the largest blues show in Tucson history. Chicago blues legends Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Luther Tucker, and Jimmy Rogers shared the stage with Texas greats Kim Wilson, Angela Strehli, and Denny Freeman. All acts were backed up by the Muddy Waters alumni of Pinetop Perkins on piano and rhythm section of Willie "Big-Eyed" Smith on drums and Calvin Jones on bass. Opening the show was a young hotshot guitarist from Louisiana named Chris Thomas. He would go on to gain fame as Chris Thomas King, starring in the blockbuster movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou as the itinerant bluesman Tommy Johnson. This sold-out All-Star Blues R***e kept people dancing at El Casino for over five hours, and now the memories from this historic night will live on forever with this rare framed poster. Framed by Barb's Frame Of Mind. Donated by a listener in memory of her husband to support great programming on KXCI. Marty Kool's Blues Review on KXCI, 91.3 FM.
