This isn’t why I picked up a camera in 2016.
I didn’t have kids when this all started.

It IS the reason I KEEP picking it up year after year.

It IS the reason I have found my passion in storytelling style photography.

If you’re a parent you know the reason. That gut punch when you realize they’re not a baby anymore, they’re a toddler. Or they’re not a toddler anymore, they’re an actual kid. Or they’re not a kid anymore they’re a big kid.

When it’s over all you have is the memories in your head and the memories on photo paper.

I’ll guide you through the entire process (groupings, timing, location, and keeping things moving so no one gets overwhelmed 😅). The goal is a mix of classic portraits and real, in-between moments that actually feel like your family.

A few quick tips:
– Plan around sunset for the best light
– Keep outfits coordinated but not identical
– Build in a little patience (especially with little kids!)

Traverse City gives us the most beautiful natural backdrop — beaches, fields, and that golden summer light ✨

Family photos aren’t just decoration—they’re a quiet reminder of belonging 🤍

They tell our kids: you are loved, you have a place here, you matter.

Studies show that seeing themselves in family photos can actually build confidence, strengthen identity, and deepen a child’s sense of connection. It’s not about perfect outfits or Pinterest walls—it’s about the story you’re telling every day.

The laughter. The chaos. The in-between moments.

Because when those memories live on your walls, they become part of how your family sees itself—connected, valued, and deeply known.

My kids get out our family albums frequently and reminisce 🥰 which reminds me, I have the past two years to put in albums BUT they are printed and in my possession which is a HUGE step.

I think extended family sessions have this notion that they’ll be stiffly posed and lack a story. I think I even I thought that, that it would feel like family photos at a wedding - switching combinations in and out until the list is completed and we all go home.

I started shooting extended family sessions because one client asked, and then another, and then last year it became one of my most popular full session bookings. And as I shot them I realized they were not only meaningful family heirlooms but an opportunity for a deeper family story. The addition of titles like aunt, uncle, cousin, grandparent - creates layers to the family story that wouldn’t be achievable otherwise.

Extended family sessions are also incredibly affordable, since we’re stacking in what would be multiple mini sessions. Each family unit or couple gets their own slice of time to capture just their dynamic. If you split an extended family session between just 3 families/couples - it ends up being less than each family booking a mini PLUS you get all your extended family shots! I love a good exercise of efficiency!

Extended family sessions are so sensible but also so magical and I’ve really grown to love them 💛
