It's not too late to help out with the plarn events!! Thursday, August 3rd at 4pm will be the last Tracy plarn event for a while as I am moving to Cal Poly Humboldt! I'm going to be projecting Wall-E and possibly have some boxes of pizza 🍕 😋
Flyer attached
Only took one pic from the plarn event on Saturday
Not too many helpers this time but thanks so much to the people who came!!
Thank you to the Tracy Branch Library for allowing me to have my plarn events in their meeting room, thank you mom and dad for helping me set up, and thank you to my volunteers Vanessa, Riya, Ella, and Gabe!
Tomorrow!!
It's that time again! These will be my last events for a while as I am moving to Humboldt so make sure you're available!

Here are those dates:

Thursday July 27
Saturday July 29

Trying to plan another plarn event before I move to college! I know we had issues with the library location in the past, but maybe just for time sake we can do it there again. I will be calling Tracy library tomorrow to make a date.
Anthony and his plarn mat!
Going to check out the Nirvaana banquet hall tonight to see if it will work for plarn events! Very excited!!
I wanted to share a picture of one of the people that received my mats. I give my mats to Gavin at Tracy Community Connections Center and he gives them to the people he feels most need them. Gavin told me "This is Sergio. He received one of your plarn mats today and is very grateful". It's so great to see how my (and my helpers) time has paid off.
(I have permission from Gavin to post this photo)
Hi everyone.
It is becoming apparent that the library may not be the best place to have the plarn events. The library room is open to the public meaning open to *everyone*. This has caused a few problems that security was able to fix but I would really like to avoid it in the future. Also the library has changed their availability making Saturdays not possible (or at least very limited).
I have contacted Tracy Community Connections Center to let them know about the change and they are going to contact a few churches.
The problem is that there are meeting rooms in tracy but not for free.
Updates to come while I look for a new meeting space!
Hello! I am very busy the month of October so there is currently no plarn event scheduled- you haven't missed anything! Stay tuned for further updates.
Tracy connects went great! I was practically able to start and finish a mat while working the booth. I got to educate so many people about my mats! I'm thinking with all of the people I talked to, the next plarn event will be full. Thank you to Gavin from Tracy Community Connections center for inviting me!
New plarn flyer!
Enjoying one of the donuts that Alice English brought to the plarn event yesterday. Thanks Alice! 🍩
The second plarn event went great! I will post once I get a confirmed date for the third event!
This Saturday! Hope to see you there!
Another sleeping mat on the books! All from just bags my family has accumulated and donations from the Karp family.
Next plarn event is September 3rd! ♻️
If you have any soft plastic bags laying around that you don't want, bring them to next months plarn event! I will have a box for bag donations
Some more mats that I have done!
The mat I finished at the event plus Ana's mat that I just finished
The flyer for my first event that happened on Saturday!
My very first plarn event went great! Hosted in the meeting room at the Tracy library and under the nonprofit, Tracy Community Connections center. We had a total of 10 people and we made a bunch of plarn!!! I finished crocheting the last half of a mat and my friend Anastasia started half a mat, I also started working on a third mat. Every volunteer will be receiving a volunteer certificate once it gets signed by the executive director of Tracy Community Connections Center
We have lots of plarn leftover and I will be posting updates of all the mats I finish from this event.
I am planning a second plarn event so stay tuned!

A recap of my Instagram post taking about plarn

Last month I started one of my favorite projects so far. I had previously seen videos of people talking about "plarn mats" and I had to learn more! Plarn is yarn made out of unwanted plastic bags that you can crochet into anything you'd like! Since I was a little girl my parents encouraged me in helping out the homeless. I remember having little care packages in the trunk of our car so whenever we saw a person in need we could help them out. One of my proudest achievements was raising $700 to go towards a homeless assistance organization for an 8th grade project (shout out to Mrs Y haha). And now I'm combining my passion of crocheting and helping those in need to make sleeping mats out of unwanted plastic bags! These mats provide great cushion, insulation, etc. This in turn helps the environment by saving almost 500 plastic bags each 6ftx3ft mat from going to waste. I had made this small sitting mat as a test (6th slide) with all of our plastic bags that we had saved. I wanted to make something bigger like yoga mat sized so the next step was collecting bags. Luckily we had a few awesome Facebook friends that donated to us but most of the mat actually is made out of bags from WinCo that they were going to throw away! I stepped out of my comfort zone and asked if we could take some of the bags out of their bag collection bin but then they actually hooked me up with enough bags to make 44 mats. (They had to get rid of these thin bags due to the switch from thin to thick bags because of covid). My mom helped in cutting the bags then I assembled and crocheted them. This process in total took around 10 hours but I'm so excited that I get to help someone out doing the thing I love most! I gave the mats to my dads good friend, Yvonne. She is involved in the Berkeley Food and Housing Project and will give the mats to someone experiencing homelessness in Tracy. I have so many more mats to make with enough bags to cover 440 hours and 44 mats. Thank you to Winco and our Facebook friends for the bags, Mom for helping make the plarn, Dad for getting me in contact with Yvonne, and of course Yvonne for doing a wonderful thing and helping out those in need
My first post asking for donations of plastic bags for the plarn mats!
Hello! Welcome to my plarn event page. Here is where you can find all information about my plarn events as well as updates about how the mats are going.
Plarn is yarn made out of unwanted plastic bags. The plarn is crocheted by me, Jamie Haskell, into sleeping mats for the homeless. Plarn mats provide great cushion, are super lightweight, and are water resistant. Plarn mats combine my passions of crochet, helping those in need, and saving the environment.
