One of the first competitions I ever recorded was at the Ice Capades Chalet in Costa Mesa. In that event there was a very young age 4 Naomi Nari Nam who just dazzled the crowd and amazed me with her performance. Such a rare talent. That year was 1989 and it has been quite a journey for this young lady medaling silver at Nationals in singles and medaling bronze in pairs a few years later over the years. Naomi now coaches and shares her expertease with skaters and developing those future champions. It is a pleasure to watch her pass the torch.
That has been the joy in skating for me is to see these talented and gifted skaters at such a young age that have that “It” factor and see there journey.
I do believe that the art of true figure skating is something you are born with to be able to reach in your heart and soul and put it out on the ice and draw an audience into that experience.

Every year the California State Games at the San Diego Ice Arena is such a highlight and a joy for me. I get to see so many skating friends and see some fun skating. Justin and Wendy have done such a terrific job to make this event a memorable competition for skaters, coaches, parents and spectators. The lighting of the State Games cauldron is such an exciting part for the competitors and people in the audience with all the teams gliding to an Olympic like experience. The tots are always one of my favorite parts of these recreational competitions. Always so darn cute!
I have actually been recording competitions at the San Diego Ice Arena since 1989. Wow were does the time go!
One of the things that all the coaches talk about every year is the top drawer hospitality provided to coaches, judges and vendors ever year. The food is so appreciated by all with meals and snacks to get everyone through the event. It was lovely catching up with Marianne Tyler and Jani Tyler who take care of everyone in the hospitality room. Jani even runs waffles down to me on camera when I'm tied up. Such service! San Diego Ice Arena will now close its doors for a few months starting tomorrow to upgrade the facility and redo the arena floor. Best of luck on getting this all done by June. Thank you all at SDIA for a terrific event.

Great weekend at the 2024 Southern California Interclub Invitational Series Final at Paramount. Hurd Video Productions was the official videographer for this amazing event. Love the Kiss and Cry addition as well as all of the terrific performances. This competition is one of favorites every year. Best of luck to all competitors.

Here's a wonderful photo of my dear friend Bob Young and myself. Taken a couple of years back at one of the many figure skating competitions that Bob would have photographed and I would have video recorded. Bob was instrumental in getting me started in recording figure skating competitions. I was working as the assistant manager at the Ice Capades Chalet in Costa Mesa in the year 1989 and he got me my first big competition gig. My first large competition was at the 1989 Palm Desert Ice Capades Chalet ISIA Open Competition. Recording customer programs on VHS tape and 35 years later I'm still preserving those memories now digitally. Thank goodness for technology improvements!
We both have cut back on the amount of competitions that we work on due to many factors. I have a full time position at Great Park Ice that takes up much of my time as you might have guessed as an Asst. Manager and Bob is focusing on other things in his life.
Back in the olden days Bob was in the skating shows doing comedy acts with his skating partner Mike Course. Me, I just loved to figure skate but never competed. (Boring)
Through it all we both share the love of figure skating and skating in general. I have been so lucky to have this man as my friend and mentor. I owe so much to this gentleman. Love you Bob.⛸⛸❤️

Every year in March the San Diego Ice Arena hosts the California State Games. The kids get a big kick to see the torch and caldron on the ice for the opening ceremonies that take place. This year Coach Geoffry Varner ignited the caldron for all to see to the background music of Olympic fanfare. This is a figure skating event that kids really look forward and I’m pleased to be the videographer for the weekend.

First competition for the season this past Sunday at the East West Ice Palace in Artesia. The 2024 Stillwell Adult MidWinter Warmup is always a great way to start the barrage of events for the year. I’m here with dear friend Merry Neitlich towards the end of the evening after skating to two of my favorite things. A yellow skating dress and Music by Hall and Oates. What a way to end the day.
My other favorite part of the day was earlier when Merry’s husband (Jerry Neitlich) was checking in skaters and didn’t recognize his own wife in a blonde wig. Asking her “What your name?” That made my day.
Next event for me will be California State Games at the beginning of March in San Diego.

Saturday was the 20th Annual Iceoplex Simi Valley ISi Competition. Always fun to see the tots do their routines and many other talented skaters. I had about four layers of jackets for this arena. It’s a cold one but this time I was prepared. Busy weekend with Artowhead Open on Sunday.
