Silica Drying: Rose Edition 🌹

Different varieties, colors, and even individual flowers can respond differently to the exact same drying process. And after years of doing this, I still find it fascinating to see how each one turns out.

This is why I spend so much time experimenting, documenting, refining, and sharing my methods. Drying flowers isn’t just tossing them in silica and hoping for the best. There’s a whole lot of trial, error, patience, and actual science behind getting those results.

And yes, sometimes the flowers still do whatever they want. 😂

If you’re struggling to get a solid white 🤍
These are my tips⬇️⬇️
1. Choose Flowers that don’t tend to darken: white ranunculus and white dahlias are great examples
2. Choose a cool toned white
3. Think of everyday as a darker shade, each day they wait is a shade they will darken.
4. Remove densely packed petals. Roses almost always need a little plucking
5. Use the freshest silica available. If you didn’t know, you can remove moisture from your silica by baking at 250F in the oven for a minimum of 5 hours.
6. Do not over cool your flowers before drying. Sitting in a fridge for a prolonged period will cause excess humidity and potentially wilting

Anyone who’s ever attempted mums knows how difficult they truly are! One flinch in the wrong direction and that’s it, they’re shattered.

So I started experimenting, and this is the best method I’ve found.
Please hear me on this: **if you work with resin, I would advise against this method**
Mostly because resin requires 100% dry, otherwise they will rot over time as the moisture releases inside the resin. If you’ve never seen what that looks like, look it up. ANYTHING with moisture will pull back and condense when trapped inside the resin.

If you want to stem them after drying I have several other videos on my process for delicate flowers!

If you’re a 2027 bride this a gentle reminder that preservationists do not have the same availability as florists. Even more so when you are both. Preservationists book up months or even years in advance sometimes, so if you have a designer in mind now is the time to reach out!
