Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council, Inc. Growing people and community through the Arts!

TRAHC is a people-building and community-building organization – a leadership organization of arts and ideas that works to create an energized, creative, connected community. Formed in 1978 by community leaders with generous assistance from the Junior League of Texarkana, TRAHC’s goals were to protect, develop, take advantage of, and provide all citizens with access to our own cultural resources.

As we have progressed, the “arts” have also proven to be a wise economic investment as well as a tourism stimulus. TRAHC is both a presenter and a preserver of historical legacies for the Perot Theatre and the Regional Arts Center. The guiding principals of TRAHC are:
- Artistic Excellence
- Education
- Collaboration
- Leadership
- Participation
- Accessibility
- Pride of Place
- Service to the Community
- Community Involvement
- Organizational Innovation

Tommy wasn't always this fabulous. He started out ages ago as a magnificent inflatable, making a splash during a Maud Public Library summer reading program.

When the library's "Color Our World" theme rolled around, Tommy got the glow-up of a lifetime. More than 40 community members, kids and grown-ups alike, picked up paintbrushes and turned him into the colorful masterpiece you see today. Every swirl and splash on his fins came from someone at the library in tiny Maud, TX.
The library community knew a name was needed to match his new style. Nominations were submitted and a vote took place to narrow down the options. During the final drawing, "Tommy the Art Shark" swam out ahead of the pack.

What Tommy really represents is how important community collaboration is. If you want to know what your town needs or how to change the world, ask the kids.
Tommy will be on display at TRAHC’s ArtSpace until Saturday, August 29, when he swims home to Maud, TX.
