in 1973, "Band On The Run" by Wings was released in the US.

This is one of my favorite album of all time, and for good reason! My first ever concert that I went to was Paul McCartney's "On The Run" Tour at Yankee Stadium on July 16, 2011. By that time, I knew just about every song The Beatles had put out so I nearly lost my mind when I found out my family and I were going to see him.

Not only, of course, did he do Beatles songs, but he also did songs from this album (as well as other solo hits). I had never heard them before until that night, but I was there singing along with Paul and about 50,000 people like I had always known them! My dad then played the CD he had at home the day after and I just fell in love with this album.

FUN FACT: Billy Joel came out on stage that night and they did "I Saw Her Standing There." How about THAT for my first ever concert?!

If you know the Dead, you know their concerts were events, never the same twice. Setlists changed nightly, songs morphed and stretched, deep cuts got the spotlight, and improvisation ruled. Fans traded tapes, swapped stories, and built one of the biggest underground music-sharing scenes long before streaming. Those legendary nights lived on through cassettes, CDs, and die-hard devotion.

The Dead weren’t afraid to take risks. Sometimes it was pure magic, sometimes a glorious mess, but always real, always exciting!

in 1961, “Duke Of Earl” by Gene Chandler was released. It would top the pop and R&B charts and hold that position for three weeks. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002, and it was selected by the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as one of their “500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll” list.

This particular song is very special to me because it was one of my grandpa‘s favorite songs. I think I even remember choosing it as one of the first songs I played on WFDU when I signed on to the main channel. My grandpa passed away in 2020 but every now and then this song would pop into my head and I would remember all the fun and loving memories we had together, especially with my grandma, Taffy. I miss them both so dearly. ♥️

Born in 1948, we bow our heads for a special "Happy Heavenly Birthday" to the Prince of Darkness himself - Ozzy Osbourne!

Growing up and immersing myself in rock music, you couldn't escape any circles without someone mentioning Ozzy or Black Sabbath in some way. Whether it was through "Paranoid," "Iron Man," and "War Pigs," or "Crazy Train" these songs were practically staples on so many set lists from cover bands that I've seen including one that I was a part of in high school. I even remember playing "Iron Man" during high school football games.

One song in particular I remember playing in a cover band holds a special place in my heart. That song was "Mama, I'm Coming Home." It is an incredible ballad from Ozzy that is beautiful and just as powerful to play as it was to hear it the first time. To celebrate today, here is that very song. Happy Birthday to you, Prince of Darkness!

in 1965, The Beatles sixth album "Rubber Soul" was released in the UK.

Taking on a more "folk rock" approach, it's also the first album to feature the sitar in the instrumentation of their songs. The title of the album derives from term "plastic soul" which was described as "imitation soul music" produced largely by white pop artists. An example of this would be Paul McCartney's "I'm Down."

The US would not receive "Rubber Soul" until Capitol's version was released three days later on December 6th. Although, it omits four songs from the original UK track listing - "Drive My Car," "Nowhere Man," "What Goes On," and "If I Needed Someone" - and Capitol instead added "I've Just Seen A Face" and "It's Only Love" to their release. These two songs were originally on the B-side of the original "Help!" album.

"Nowhere Man" and "What Goes On" where released as singles by Capitol. However, it was for the next album in The Beatles's North American catalog which was "Yesterday and Today."

Born in 1946, from County Waterford in Ireland, I'd like to wish a Happy Birthday to Gilbert O'Sullivan!

Known for his percussive piano-playing style, observational lyrics and word play, he moved to London in 1967 where he adopted a "depression-era street urchin" look - consisting of a bowl cut, cloth cap and short trousers - in order to stand out as he looked for a record deal. In 1972, he achieved international success with "Alone Again (Naturally)" which was a ballad touching on the subjects of su***de and loss. It went to No. 3 in the UK and spent 6 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 in the US. That same year, he went No. 1 in the UK with "Clair" and, in 1973, he achieved his third million-selling record with "Get Down."

To celebrate the irishman's birthday, here he is playing his song "Get Down" with Elton John from the television special "The Gilbert O'Sullivan Show" in 1973. Happy Birthday, Gilbert!

Born in 1934, I'd like to wish a 'Happy Heavenly Birthday' to another incredibly soulful voice - the legendary Billy Paul!

This is the man Questlove of The Roots called, "one of the criminally unmentioned proprietors of socially conscious post-revolution '60s civil rights music." This is apparent in one of his other well known hits, "Am I Black Enough For You?" from 1973. While it is has become a symbol of black pride, according to Paul it was not something he originally wanted to release as a single having enjoyed the success of "Me & Mrs. Jones." He would have preferred another song titled "Brown Baby," especially if he knew how much "Am I Black Enough For You?" would derail his career. This is because mainstream radio stations refused to play the song due to its content which is something Curtis Mayfield also experienced after the release of the "Super Fly" movie soundtrack. Effectively, both singers were blackballed. Nevertheless, Billy Paul's music and legacy serves as a reminder that you can't keep a good man down and that you should never be ashamed of who you are. We still remember him and play his music to this day.

To celebrate today, here he is that very song from his album "360 Degrees of Billy Paul" which also featured "Me & Mrs. Jones." Happy Birthday, Billy!

Born in 1933, I'd like to wish a 'Happy Heavenly Birthday' to Lou Rawls!

The man with the golden baritone voice sold over 40 million records, made 61 albums, and won the Grammy Award for "Best Male R&B Vocal Performance" three times in 1968, 1972, and 1978! There is something about Lou's voice that oozes romance and warmth. It feels so smooth and velvety even during moments in a song when he 'growls.' He is, undoubtedly, one of my favorite singers of all time.

To celebrate his birthday, I could think of no other song than his most iconic hit - "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine." Here he is performing it on Soul Train in 1976. Happy Birthday, Lou!
