Of all the birthday posts I have made this year, this one is definitely special! Happy Birthday to our General Manager, Opie the DJ Girl!

Since succeeding Duff Sheffield in the captain’s chair, she has continued on his legacy building up WFDU and getting us involved with our community. Every day I look forward to jumping in front of the mic on Saturday mornings before handing the controls over at 10. I hope we have many more incredible years together with this station!

Today is a very special Heavenly Birthday - in 1946, the world was graced by the arrival of the legendary Freddie Mercury.

Born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar, he and his family would flee to Middlesex, England in 1964 during the Zanzibar Revolution. In 1970, he would go on to form Queen with Brian May and Roger Taylor (and eventually John Deacon) and the rest was history.

To celebrate, I know I could pick any songs by Queen but I want to show you something from his solo projects. In 1987, he released his own version of the song "The Great Pretender." Originally done by The Platters in 1955, Freddie believed it to be the perfect song that represented himself and his career. It would reach #4 on the UK charts with a music video featuring Roger Taylor and actor Peter Straker in drag and Freddie portraying his various guises from some of Queen's most iconic music videos. See if you can name them all. Here is the music video for Freddie Mercury's "The Great Pretender."

A very special Happy Heavenly Birthday to the prodigy known as Billy Preston!

Born in 1946, he developed a natural gift for the piano at a young age having been completely self-taught. By age 10, he was playing organ for Mahalia Jackson. By age 11, he appeared on the Nat King Cole show in 1957. By 1962, he played for Little Richard and then Ray Charles five years later. He was such a talented pianist that, through the recommendation of George Harrison, joined The Beatles during the “Get Back” and “Abbey Road” sessions to play keys.

Want to see how much of a natural he is? Here he is on the German music program “Beat-Club” busting out a jam of “Them Changes” with Manuel Kellugh (drums) and Robert Sam Jr. (piano) of Graham Central Station, Grady Manning (bass), and George Johnson (guitar) of the Brothers Johnson!

Happy Birthday, Billy! ♥️

in 1978, Frankie Valli was at #1 on the HOT 100 with “Grease!” It would sell 7 million copies after being released as a single from the original soundtrack in May earlier that year. Also, you may or may not know, this song was written by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees.

As such, here’s something you might enjoy. This is the Bee Gees (Barry, Robin & Maurice) performing the song at their famous “One Night Only” special in Las Vegas in 1997. Barry sings the opening verse, followed by Frankie’s vocals (from the track), and even an appearance from the late Olivia Newton-John in the audience!

in 1986, Paul McCartney released his “Press To Play” album.

This album doesn’t get talk about much, which for Paul might be a bit of a blessing. The album became his lowest-selling album of his career selling just over 250,000 copies, it failed to certify gold and only peaked at #30 on the album charts. Plus, after the critical and commercial disaster of the “Give My Regards To Broad Street,” this was definitely not the follow up fans had been hoping for.

I just so happen to have a copy of the first single released from that album simply titled “Press.” It only peaked at #21 here in the USA, and yes the sleeve is a little banged up but so was Paul’s career at the time.

It's International Beatleweek in this week! Brought to us by Cavern City Tours in Merseyside, it's an annual celebration of the music of the Fab Four with live music all week long at the famous Cavern Club.

To celebrate the beginning of the week, and inspired by the 60th Anniversary of their Shea Stadium concert, I popped on this legendary live album on my Yellow Submarine turntable. This is "The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" - Released on Capitol Records in 1977 it was the only official live album release from The Beatles at the time taken from their performances in 1964 and 1965. Brought to us by George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick as an intense labor of love, it is for those unlucky fans (like myself) who wanted to witness the magic of a live Beatles concert to the tune of 13 iconic songs and about 17,000 screaming girls.

Happy International Week!
