114 years ago, tragedy struck the Centro Asturiano.

On June 8, 1912, the beautiful red brick building that served as the home of the Centro Asturiano was destroyed by fire.

Founded in 1902 by immigrants primarily from Asturias, Spain, the organization provided what was known as cradle-to-grave services, including healthcare, life insurance, banking, recreational activities, and even cemetery benefits for its members.

The Centro Asturiano’s first clubhouse occupied the second floor of a wooden-frame building on Seventh Avenue. Membership quickly grew from a handful of founders to more than 2,500 by 1908, when a grand new headquarters was constructed on the site where the current building stands today.

The three-story red brick clubhouse featured a bar, ballroom, and theatre, serving as the social and cultural heart of the organization.

On June 8, 1912, a devastating fire broke out on the theatre stage and rapidly spread through the first and second floors, where a firefighter and a volunteer lost their lives battling the blaze.

At the time, the fire chief believed the fire was caused by a cigar accidentally dropped among flammable materials backstage. But two days later, he received a note of blame from an anonymous man whom newspapers had named “The Firebug.”

Despite the devastating loss of the original red-brick building, the members of the Centro Asturiano refused to be discouraged and, at a meeting held at The German American Club, voted to rebuild.

Construction on a new clubhouse began in April 1913, and by May 1914, the magnificent yellow brick building that stands today was completed. The new 40,000-square-foot structure held a library, ladies’ parlor, ballroom, theatre, gymnasium, and a bowling alley, and membership peaked at more than 5,000 in the 1930s.

More than a century later, the Centro Asturiano remains a powerful symbol of resilience, community, and heritage. Rising from the tragedy, the organization rebuilt not only a building, but a lasting legacy that continues to tell the story of generations who called the Centro Asturiano home.

In just one week, we will gather to celebrate the life and legacy of an extraordinary woman whose impact can still be felt throughout Tampa and Ybor City today.

Adela Hernandez Gonzmart was more than the granddaughter of Casimiro Hernandez, Sr., founder of the iconic Columbia Restaurant. She was a gifted musician, a passionate advocate for education, a preservationist, and a civic leader who dedicated her life to strengthening the community she loved.

A Juilliard graduate and accomplished performer, Adela shared her passion for music with generations of students and audiences, including many at the Centro Asturiano de Tampa. Her commitment to preserving Hispanic culture and heritage helped shape organizations and institutions that continue to serve our community today.

As a founding member of the Ybor City Museum Society, the first female president of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce, and a leader on countless civic and cultural boards, Adela's influence extended far beyond the stage. Her legacy lives on through the scholarships she championed, the organizations she strengthened, and the generations she inspired.

Join us next Sunday, June 14, as members of the Gonzmart family share personal stories, family traditions, and reflections on Adela's remarkable life during a special Sunday Table Chat at the Centro Asturiano.

While the wine tasting portion of the event is sold out, tickets remain available for this meaningful conversation celebrating one of Ybor City's most beloved community leaders.

In 1886, more than 700,000 ci**rs were produced in Ybor City.

Within a few decades, that number would grow into the hundreds of millions, transforming Tampa into the Cigar Capital of the World and attracting generations of immigrants who built the community we know today.

Their legacy can still be found throughout Ybor City—in the brick factory buildings, the mutual aid societies, and the traditions that continue to bring us together.

Join us on June 17 for Bourbon, Baseball & Ci**rs, an evening celebrating three pieces of Tampa's heritage.

Enjoy a premium cigar courtesy of Market of Ci**rs Ybor, a guided tasting of Hooten Young bourbons, ballpark-inspired fare, and a special display from the Tampa Baseball Museum while watching the Rays take on the Dodgers.

For one evening, we'll raise a glass to the people and traditions that helped shape Tampa.

Imagine standing on the streets of Ybor City in 1895.

The air carries the scent of to***co. Factory whistles signal the start of another workday. Workers speaking Spanish, Italian, and English fill the sidewalks. Inside the cigar factories, skilled hands roll thousands of ci**rs while lectores read newspapers and novels aloud to the workers.

Just a few blocks away, members gather at the Centro Asturiano—a home away from home for immigrants building a new life in Tampa.

These are not just stories from a history book. They are the lives that shaped our community.

Join us on June 24 for a special members-only evening at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts as we explore Ci**rs! Photography, Industry, and Identity.

Through rare historic photographs and contemporary images, we'll step back in time and discover the people, places, and traditions that transformed Ybor City into the cigar capital of the world.

Wine and light refreshments will be served.

We hope you'll join us on this journey through Tampa's past.

We have been under the best care with Callie in our corner. 🐾

Whether she’s assisting with daily tasks, greeting guests as they arrive, or keeping a watchful eye on the building, Callie takes her role as the Centro Asturiano’s newest team member very seriously.

Of course, even the hardest working employees need a break. You can usually find Callie powering through her afternoon responsibilities until the inevitable 4:00 PM sleepies sets in.

Next time you stop by the Centro, make sure to say hello to our newest team member!

Callie just wants to remind everyone that the weekend is almost here! 🐾

We’re tossing it back to 1942, when Ybor City’s very own Inter-Social League All-Stars took the field in a Navy Relief Benefit game against the West Coast League All-Stars at Cuscaden Park. ⚾️✨

Twenty-one players were selected by the Ybor City League managers, including two players for each position and five pitchers. Representing the Centro Asturiano were Manuel Fernandez, Bernardo Fernandez, Joe Yglesias, Ramon Rodriguez, Faustino Casares, Robert Pulido, and Robert Longval.

The Inter-Social Leagues began playing at Cuscaden Park in 1938 and quickly became an important part of Tampa’s baseball culture. In fact, few semi-professional leagues anywhere in the country produced as many Major League players as the Ybor City Inter-Social Leagues.

Much of the league’s talent was homegrown. With only three high schools serving Tampa during the 1940s and 1950s, many of the city’s young athletes grew up playing alongside one another before competing on local teams.

Several social clubs organized baseball teams that competed against clubs sponsored by cigar factories and other organizations throughout Tampa. The Inter-Social Leagues of Ybor City and West Tampa were made up of four teams: Centro Asturiano, the Cuban Club, the Loyal Knights, and the Italian Club.

The benefit game drew a large crowd and was closely followed by residents throughout the community reflecting just how important baseball, camaraderie, and friendly rivalry were to life in Tampa during this era.
