Today was Orientation Day for the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight’s two fall flights!

Nearly 200 veterans, along with their guardians, are preparing for an unforgettable trip to Washington, D.C., where they’ll visit the monuments and memorials built to honor their service and sacrifice.

This fall’s flights are scheduled for September 15 and October 13. And one of the most important things for veterans to know is this: the Honor Flight is completely FREE for every veteran who goes.

Eastern Iowa Honor Flight welcomes veterans from all branches and eras of service, and Tama County veterans are eligible to apply.

If you’re a veteran who would like more information about the Honor Flight, or if you know someone who might need a little help getting signed up, please reach out to Charlie Betz at the Tama American Legion. We’d be glad to help you through the process.

There are still a lot of veterans in our area who deserve the opportunity to make this trip. Help us make sure they know it’s available to them — at absolutely no cost to the veteran.

Ed and Dave Hemby were on BINGO duty today at Birkwood Village Tama/Toledo

The guys from Tama American Legion Post 73 spent the afternoon calling numbers, handing out a few prizes, and enjoying some good company with the Birkwood residents.

We always enjoy the chance to get out into the community, share a few laughs, and spend some time with our friends at Birkwood.

Thanks to everyone at Birkwood for having us. We had a great time!

The Tama American Legion Family was proud to present the proceeds from our July fundraiser to MSGT Josh Steinback and his wife, Angela.

What started as a fundraiser became something much bigger — a chance for our community to come together and show Josh and Angela just how many people are standing behind them.

To everyone who donated, volunteered, attended, contributed items, helped with the event, or simply showed up to offer your support: thank you. This check represents the generosity of an entire community.

Josh and Angela, we hope it helps make the road ahead just a little easier. You remain in our thoughts, and you can count on your Legion family and the Tama-Toledo community to continue standing with you.

September 11, 2001 is a day we will never forget.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember those who lost their lives, those who ran toward danger, and the first responders who gave everything in service to others.

But honoring first responders shouldn’t be limited to one day in history.

Every day, right here in our own communities, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, law enforcement officers, 911 dispatchers, and emergency management personnel answer the call. Some are career professionals. Many are volunteers. All have given their time, energy, and often made sacrifices most of us never see.

On Friday, September 11, the Tama American Legion would like to say thank you.

All active, retired, and volunteer first responders are invited to enjoy a FREE Fish Fry meal from 5:00–7:00 PM.

Tama American Legion Post 73
1105 E. 5th Street, Tama, IA

On this 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the sacrifice of that day — and we honor the men and women who have continued to serve our communities every day in the years since.

You serve our community. Let us serve you.

It seems like we just got the lawn chairs out, and now somehow we’re already ONE MONTH away from the first Tama American Legion Fish Fry of the 2026–27 season!

That’s right — Friday, September 11, the fryers fire back up and we’ll be serving starting at 5:00 PM.

There’s still plenty of summer left. We’ve just got 31 days to cram it all in before Tama American Legion Fish Fry season starts.

Come hungry, grab a cold drink, catch up with friends, and help us kick off another season at Tama American Legion Post 73.

Friday, September 11 — 5:00 PM
Tama American Legion
1105 E. 5th St., Tama

After that, you know the routine: Legion Fish Fry every second Friday of the month.

So enjoy the rest of summer while you can. September is already standing outside tapping its watch.
