This is a photo of my father. He was born in Tama. He is standing before Mount Suribachi during World War II. If you don’t recognize this place, then you may not fully grasp the weight of history — or the immense cost of freedom. Take note: there is no flag on the peak. A […]

🇺🇸 Tama American Legion Sends Eight Young Men to Iowa Boys State! 🇺🇸

We’re proud to support the next generation of leaders! This week, eight outstanding young men from South Tama County High School are attending the American Legion Iowa Boys State at Camp Dodge.

Boys State is a six-day immersive civics experience that dives deep into the workings of government through the LEADS curriculum — Learn, Engage, Accept, Do, & Share. From mock elections to city planning, each day is packed with leadership development, teamwork, and the kind of hands-on learning that inspires real-world action.

We wish these young leaders an unforgettable week of learning and growth!

A special thank you to Iowa Premium for their generous sponsorship, helping make this life-changing opportunity possible for our young men.

🇺🇸 Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers and Supporters 🇺🇸

This Memorial Day weekend was a moving tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and support of so many in our community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to:

⭐ The Tama American Legion Family
⭐ The Tama-Toledo Veterans of Foreign Wars
⭐ The Tama Avenue of Flags Organization
⭐ The South Tama County Community School District staff and students
⭐ And all the community volunteers and supporters who helped or attended our Memorial Day services

From placing flags to setting up ceremonies, sharing heartfelt words to standing in silent honor — your time, your effort, and your presence made a difference. Thank you for helping us remember and reflect, and for showing that the spirit of service and remembrance is alive and strong in Tama.

Together, we honored. Together, we remembered.

Flags are still flying at Oak Hill and St Pat’s Cemeteries. Get out and see them soon. We will be lower the flags starting at 4pm. If you’re free this afternoon please come help.
