The Flower Child

Growing up, I was always around flowers. My Mom and Dad were both Master Gardners, where they shared their passion of Flowers, Landscapes and Design with one another. Our Family was highlighted in a 1990’s Southern Living Magazine, where my parents home and garden were on the cover. It was a way of life for me, naturally.

With my Mom’s love for everything flowers, it was inevitable that I would grow to be the same way (I didn't really have a choice). While my Mother was an avid Gardner, she also picked up Floral Designing. Her specialty was using local Native flowers and greenery to create beautiful centerpieces and hand tied bouquets. That was her little nitch. As a child, younger than I can really remember, I would always have my hand in the flowers. Often she would give me a couple of broken stems and a block of oasis to entertain myself while she got her work done.

As a teenager the nickname “Flowa” or “Flower Child” was what most of my friends called me . How could they not, I was the Flower Child. As a young adult I continued to tag along with my Mom to various events in total awe with what you could create with flowers. She would ask for my help with random garnishes and let me play with my own colors and textures. I think she was impressed at my designing capabilities. At this point my Mom realized that I was capable of doing my own designing.

My Mom asked me to start working for her (under her guidance, of course). Her Catering Business was growing and she couldn't juggle all of it. I knew I could do it. I had the knowledge from my mom, the experience of working with flowers all of my life and I was ready! I love being around flowers. I love holding them. I love daydreaming about color combo’s, texture combos, I was the person for the job. Little did she know, I didn't need her guidance (She won't admit that). I would often look at magazines and websites and create my own designs, aside from the traditional “Garden Flower” Look that my Mom loved. Funny thing is, my Mom starting asking me for ideas. At that point, she was ready to turn me loose on my own. Its History from there. I am so privileged to have the background that I have. To say I am lucky to have my Mothers talent is a understatement.
