Artist Spotlight: Steve Everett
Another BONUS - closing out the weekend!!! Steve is another special one, who’s been a big part of making this whole thing happen.💜 We met Steve in September of 2016 at a house show at Eva Boat and David Smith’s house, and that’s what started our relationship with Rock By The Sea (and eventually The Rock Boat), after we’d met the Smith’s on Sail Across the Sun. Steve became an artist we loved at Rock By The Sea Events in Florida, Nashville, Ohio, and Delaware, in our home (picture is from a house show in 2018), in other people’s homes, and at Earth Angel events. He also became not only a constant performer but trusted consultant for Texafied, teaching us the ropes of festival life. Without question, he was instrumental in making this whole thing take flight!
I have always loved his lyrics and said he’s a “lyrical genius” - words are my thing - so I’m partial to songs and that hit, lyrically. Chart-wise, Everett has had some success with tunes chosen for their fit with gaming, particularly NASCAR Heat. Chemical Weapon, Never Love You, Long Year, Fake It - high energy, driving songs. But LISTEN👂🏻, they’ve also got a lot to say. EVERYONE loves West Coast Time (as they should), and in my opinion, The Only Way, off his latest album, is of the same ilk. Love In Snow is from a Rock By The Sea Christmas Album, but made it to Sirius XM and gets mad play every holiday season, so that’s fun and worth checking out. As always, though, I like to highlight the NON-hits. My favorites are Last Tonight, Boats, and Numbers Game (lyrics below).
Steve will be playing on Friday and Saturday, June 5 & 6 at Muddy Jakes Sports Grille and Pub - FREE TO THE PUBLIC - fifteen bands, noon to midnight.💜🎶🤠
“It takes ‘bout everything I have
to swing my feet over the edge and start again.
Even my mirror’s disappointed in where I am.
Well if comparison’s the thief of joy,
I’ve stolen all I can.
I’d have to live well past a hundred to feel good again.
‘Cause we all know how it gets played.
We start out even, but you can’t get back again.
And all I’ve ever had is letters to my name,
And I’m afraid, this here,
This here’s a numbers game.
This here’s a numbers game.”
